PATATAS BRAVAS

Looking to whip up some delicious tapas for your next Spanish dinner party? Then look no
further than patatas bravas, a dish that is native to Spain and super easy to create. This crowd
favorite typically consists of cubed potatoes which are fried in oil and served warm with spicy
sauce. The dish is commonly served in restaurants and bars in Sevilla and throughout Spain. And
if you’re feeling adventurous, you can always experiment with adding a number of extra
toppings, such as chorizo, chicken, or fried fish.
PISTO

Think ratatouille is something you’d only ever get served in a French restaurant? Think
again. Okay, so it’s not technically ratatouille, but pisto is often called the Spanish
version of the classic French dish. The recipe sees tomatoes, peppers, zucchini, onions,
and garlic sliced up and roasted with a lot of olive oil to give it that classic
Mediterranean flavor. Hailing from the plains of the La Mancha region, pisto can be a
side dish, appetizer, or even a main course. Serve it with some fresh salad, bread, and of
course, some local red wine for the ultimate Spanish experience.
HISTORY OF ISLAM
THARIQ BIN ZIYAD IN SPAIN
Tariq bin Ziyad (Arabic: ‫)ارق اد‬, known in Spanish history as a legend as
Taric el Tuerto was a military commander of the Umayyad dynasty who led
the Muslim conquest of the Al-Andalus region (Spain, Portugal, Andorra,
Gibraltar and surrounding areas). ) in 711 AD.
In the summer of 711 AD (92 H), Tariq bin Ziyad left for Al-Andalus. On 29
April 711, Tariq's troops landed in Gibraltar (the name Gibraltar comes
from the Arabic, Jabal Tariq which means Mount Tariq).
Tariq's forces invaded Andalusia and in the summer of 711 achieved a
decisive victory over the Visigoths, where the king, Roderick, was killed on
19 July 711 at the battle of Guadalete. After that, Tariq became governor
of the Andalusia region before being summoned back to Damascus by
Caliph Walid I.

THE ROMAN WALLS OF LUGO

Built in the 3rd and 4th centuries AD to protect the Roman city of Lucus Augusti,
the Lugo Roman Walls are incredibly well-preserved, rising up to a height of
between eight and twelve metres, with their two kilometre circuit remaining
entirely intact.
Although the Lugo Roman Walls were built at a time when foreign invasion was a
threat to all Roman Hispania, it is believed that they were actually intended to
defend the city from internal threats, particularly from revolts of local
tribespeople. In the end, it wasn’t disgruntled locals who breached the Lugo
Roman Walls but the Germanic Suevi tribe in the 5th century.
