CSULB Circle K is currently 44 members strong.

Hello again Long Beach Circle K! Its another issue of the newsletter! But who cares! Its SUMMER! Thats right. Freedom! I hope you all passed your classes! Hahah. I hope youre as excited for summer as I am! DUH! Of course you are, cause that means SUMMER EVENTS. Summer service, summer socials, summer fundraisers and so much more! Pshhh! Dont think that just because school ended Circle K did! Cause weve got plenty of events! First off, Id like to apologize for this LATE issue. :( Some things have come up that have made it really difficult to put out the issue on time. I know, it totally stinks. But hey! At least its here now, right? Thats all that matters! Next Id like to tell you guys that the newsletter is BY members, FOR members. Now, what does this mean? It means that you can SUBMIT articles on events on what happened and what you did, and theres a very HIGH chance that if you submit it that itll be published in the newsletter, which reaches out not only to our home club of Long Beach, but to other clubs in Metro Division! Heck, maybe even as far as the district! So keep attending events, and keep sending in those articles! Remember, if youd like to submit articles, feel free to send them to CSULBCircleK@gmail.com as well as a picture of yourself! I cant wait to see what you guys have to say about what events you did! I want to let you guys know that this issue of the newsletter is going to be SHORT. Why? Simply because the executive board is planning awesome summer events, and not even we really know whats going to happen in the next month. So just be aware and ready for whats to come! Just keep checking your emails!

Signed,

Sean D. Nguyen 2011-2012 CSULB Circle K President

Special Olympics
by Ashley McGrail On the early morning of Friday, May 20, 2011, four of us Circle K'ers attended the Special Olympics and helped them set up for what would be a fun-filled and warm day. We began with putting tents up to block the sun from hitting each booth. We then set up chairs below each tent for where the participants would be sitting, while waiting for their turn to join in the event. In our case the tennis ball throw, there were other events such as the softball throw, relays, and hurdles, as well as many others. It was such a great feeling to see special children being able to have a fun time. One person told us " Thanks for doing this for the kids, not many people have fun events for special children. We appreciate you for being here, and hope you come back next year." As the day ended, we saw happy faces and certificates that the children had won. For the short period of 5 hours it took to set up, work the booth, and clean up, it was well worth the enjoyment we could give these children by volunteering.

Fountain Valley Relay For Life

by Ashley McGrail On May 21, 2011, Circle K joined in to walk around the track at Fountain Valley High School for The American Cancer Society Relay For Life which is a life-changing event that gives everyone in communities across the globe a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease. Basically, we fundraised money for relay for life before we got onto the track that day. At least one person in each group had to be out on the track at all times, this signifies the way Cancer patients have to battle, 24 hours a day. Although it was pretty hot, we all managed to take part, whether it was 1 lap of walking around the track or 20 laps. Many Circle Kers slept over in a tent that night too, since it was a 24-hour event.

YOU! Way to go You! [Tour De Cure]

by Renee Eguia A couple of CSULB Circle K'ers decided to volunteer at the Tour de Cure event although it required getting less sleep than the typical college student. We started by setting up the lunch area by arranging bananas and oranges into neat rows and helped out with making PB and J sandwiches. One of the coordinators needed help in the bridge area and each Circle K'er was dropped off in a designated location to watch over some items. Each Circle K'er was in charge of making sure the bicyclists rode in between the orange cones and on top of the carpet. Over time, the carpet and plywood may have shifted and therefore we had to ensure that it was in place. We were able to cheer our hearts out during our stay at the bridge area. Then, we were moved to the finish line area and continued cheering by incorporating the YOU! WAY TO GO YOU! and the We Are Proud of You cheers. We had to help move bicycles from a truck to a bicycle pick up area and even had a free lunch! All-in-all it was a great time spent with bicyclists, volunteers and CSULB CKI! :) <3

Balloons Galore [Lavender Graduation]

by Renee Eguia Sean, David and I volunteered at LGBT's annual Lavender Graduation despite the miscommunication we had. Lavender Graduation is an intimate and close-knit commencement ceremony the the LGBT community at CSULB celebrates for all of the graduating seniors. The three of us started helping out by lifting decorations and other arrangements into the USU ballrooms. We were then told to arrange the seats in a straight fashion. Next, our folding skills were put to the test when we had to fold dozens of programs for the commencement ceremony. Afterwards we placed a program on each seat in the USU ballrooms. The biggest aspect and most important decoration for the ceremony was the rainbow balloon arch. As a result of more than an hour of blowing up, tying and arranging the balloons in a rainbow arch, we were able to finish the arch! We then finished decorating by adding a hint of lavender and white balloons in the perimeter of the USU ballrooms as well as the vicinity of the USU so that parents, friends, and guests will know where the ballrooms were located. :) <3

Zombies everywhere! [Metro Division Humans VS Zombies]

by Joe Reguindin On May 13th a bunch of us Long Beach Circle Kers embarked on a dangerous journey to UCLA to attended Humans vs. Zombies. It was an epic game of survival as well as a battle between the living and the dead! Our choice of weapons you ask? Nerf guns, marshmallows, and socks! There were multiple rounds each with different objectives. The first round was Survival Mode where everyones goal was to stay alive until time is called. In another round we had to protect our base from the zombies and protect an object. One of the last games was played in UCLAs sculpture garden where we had to protect a prince and a princess and safely escort them to a secret base that only a few people on the team were told about. In the final game, we had to stay alive for about fifteen minutes before we were allowed to run to the safe helicopter. This was a very difficult task because there were a limited amount of places that we could hide in and many zombies were running around checking everywhere for humans. But in the end a very few survived including one of our club members, the district governor, Brett Butler. He used his skinniness and height to his advantage by climbing and hiding in a tree. The day was full of energy and epicness and the night ended that way as well with Winnie Banh, a UCLA Circle Ker, swiping all of us some food for free! Thanks Winnie and thanks UCLA! We hope to see you again Fall Semester for some more human and zombie hunting!
