JOB DESCRIPTION

Staff, Radiologic Technologist

General

1. Assist with scheduling patients and coordinating exams to assure smooth work
flow.
2. Instruct patient regarding preparation prior to imaging procedures.
3. Obtain patient’s medical history prior to any radiographic procedures.
4. Clean, disinfect or sterilize work area as needed.
5. Notify Biomed and Chief Radiologic Technologist for equipment malfunction.
6. Inspect radiographic equipments to make sure it is operable and safe (example:
cords, cable, table, attachments, and strap).
7. Manage complex interpersonal interactions within the workplace in an effective
manner.
8. Explain and confirm patient’s preparation prior to begin any radiographic
procedure.
9. Follow environmental protection standards for handling and disposing of bio-
hazardous materials.
10. Provide patient safety, comfort and modesty.
11.Notify Chief Radiologic Technologist, Department Head and Ancillary Service
Director in any adverse events or incidents such as patient fall, wrong patient
imaged or wrong procedure performed.
12. Clear communication and instruction to patients to avoid delays of the
procedure.
13. Explain procedure instructions to patient and its significant others.
14. Follow appropriate procedures when caring for patients with communicable
diseases.
15. Question female patient of child-bearing age about date of last menstrual period
or possible pregnancy and take appropriate action (document response and/or
contact physician).
16. Wear a personnel monitoring device while on duty.
17. List patient’s name and its procedure after the examination in the radiologist
reader’s form.
18. Send images to the Radiologist for interpretation.
19. Print radiographic and sonographic reports.
20. Forward radiographic and sonographic reports to the station.
21.Verify accuracy of patient identification before the procedure.
22.Recognize the need for periodic maintenance and evaluation of radiographic
equipment affecting image quality and radiation safety.
23. Record all radiographic procedures in their respective logbook after each
procedure.
24. Notify the nursing station when the patient is ready to be taken back to their
rooms.
25. Prepares charge slips and sees to it that all patients are properly billed.
26. Keeps all linens like gowns, towels in their proper places, ready for next use.
27. Drops all linens to the laundry.
28. Keeps the department clean and orderly always.

Specific Job Responsibilities per unit

I. X-ray
1. Confirm patient’s identity.
2. Evaluate patient’s ability to understand and comply with requirements for
the requested examination.
3. Obtain pertinent medical history.
4. Verify informed consent as necessary.
5. Communicate relevant information to the Radiologist.
6. Use immobilization devices as needed to prevent patient movement
and/or ensure patient safety.
7. Evaluate the need for and use of protective shielding.
8. Restrict beam to the anatomical area of interest.
9. Set technical factors to produce diagnostic images and adhere to ALARA.
10. Prevent all unnecessary persons from remaining in area during x-ray
exposure.
11. Advocate radiation safety and protection.
12. Determine appropriate exposure factors.
13. Remove all radiopaque materials from patient or table that could interfere
with the image.
14. Perform post processing in preparation for interpretation.
15. Use radiographic side markers at the time of image acquisition.
16. Add electronic annotations on digital images to indicate position and date
of the procedure.
17. Perform routine and special radiographic procedures following specific
department protocols.

II. CT Unit
1. Evaluate for contraindications to IV or oral contrast prior scheduling.
2. Evaluate renal function prior scheduling.
3. Determine if patients has had previous contrast studies that may interfere
with CT studies.
4. Obtain prior studies and biopsy results for comparison.
5. Educate patient and its family with regards to the importance of following
bowel preparation before the procedure to achieve an exam of diagnostic
quality.
6. Review patient’s medical record and request form to determine
appropriate scan parameters for suspected pathology.
7. Modify exam protocol based on patient condition and diagnosis.
8. Assure that artifact-producing objects have been removed from the
patient.
9. Assist patient on and off the scanning table.
10. Monitor patient’s condition during scanning procedure.
11. Monitor patient’s vital signs.
12. Verify completion of documentation before performing any procedure
requiring informed consent.
13. Provide post procedure information to patient according to department
guidelines.
14. Administer first aid after any incident of extravasations.
15. Assists Interventional Radiologist for CT guided procedures.
16. Maintain controlled access to restricted area during radiation exposure to
ensure safety of patients, visitors and hospital personnel.
17. Screen female patients for the possibility of pregnancy.
18. Ensure appropriate radiation protection during procedure.
19. Perform fast calibration before the first patient of the day.
20. Perform tube warm up.
21. Electronically transmit data for long term storage (Candelis).
22. Retrieve image data (raw or reconstructed).
23. Electronically transmit data for to workstations.
24. Enter patient data necessary to initiate scan.
25. Perform retrospective reconstruction using raw data to create images
with change of slice thickness, algorithm and DFOV.
26. Perform multi-planar reconstruction.
27. Perform shutdown, power off, and restart machine.
28. Position patient according to type of study indicated.
29. Assess image quality to determine completion of procedure.
30. Alert physician, Radiologist or medical staff of life threatening condition
such as hemorrhage and pneumothorax.
31. Determine appropriate dose of contrast agent to be administered based
on the type of procedure, patient’s age, renal function and weight.
32. Prior preparation and administration of contrast agent, review information
to prepare appropriate type and dosage.
33. Administer oral contrast agents.
34. Prepare IV contrast for administration.
35. Evaluate line for compatibility for IV contrast injection.
36. Access the existing line for IV contrast injection.
37. Select appropriate flow rate for contrast delivery according to image
protocols.
38. Administer contrast agent.
39. Utilize bolus tracking during angiographic procedures.
40. Document amount, rate and localization for successful IV contrast
administration.
41. Document IV contrast extravasation.
42. Recognize contrast extravasation and determine initial response.
43. Monitor patient during the introduction of contrast media.
44. Monitor patient for reactions to contrast agent.
45. Perform routine and special CT scan procedures following specific
department protocols.
46. Explain post procedural instructions to patient or patient’s family.

III. Ultrasound
1. Inputs patient data in the ultrasound machine.
2. Assists sonologists during ultrasound procedures.
3. Prepares patient for ultrasound.
4. Verify accuracy of patient identification before the procedure.
5. Assists surgeon and/or physicians during ultrasound guided procedures.
6. Assists Radiologists (make templates and print results) during STAT
ultrasound procedures beyond office hours.
