Learning Competency: Describe the nuclear model of the atom and the location of
its major components (protons, neutrons, and electrons)

CONCEPT NOTES

The Nuclear Model of the Atom

 The atom consists of a dense positive center
called the nucleus and is orbited by negatively
charged electrons.
 The nuclear model of the atom was first
proposed by Ernest Rutherford while working
under JJ Thomson.
 Atom consists of three subatomic particles:
proton, electron, neutron
 The center of the atom is called the nucleus. It
contains most of the mass of an atom. It is composed of positively charged
protons and neutrons which are neutral in charge.
 Negatively charged electrons orbit the nucleus at a great distance compared
to the size of the nucleus.
 Most of the atom consists of an empty space.
 In a neutral atom, the number of positively charged proton is equal to the
number of negatively charged electrons. Example: An atom of carbon has 6
protons and 6 electrons.

Exercises: Modified True or False.

Write True if the statement is correct. If false, change the underlined
word or group of words to make the whole statement correct.

_________1. Most of the atom consists of an empty space.

_________2. The nucleus of the atom composed of the protons and neutrons.
_________3. The center of the atom is called nucleus.
_________4. J.J. Thomson proposed the nuclear model of the atom.
_________5. In a neutral atom, the number of protons is greater than the
number of electrons.
