The Structure of an Atom

Atom is the basic unit of matter and it is consist of three sub-atomic particles: protons, neutrons
and electrons. It was Democritus – a Greek Philosopher who first discover atom which he named
it as “atomos.” meaning indivisible, because it was once thought that atoms were the smallest
things in the universe and could not be divided.
This illustration is the nuclear model of the structure of atoms – helium (He).
The positive particle represented in color yellow is the proton. The orange
colored particle is the neutron. Both the proton and the neutron are inside
the central part called the nucleus. Its weight in grams is the atomic mass.

The blue-colored particle is the negatively-charged
com
electron which is in no particular point hanging around
the electron cloud.

All atoms are represented in symbols written in the periodic table of elements arranged
according to the number of protons. Generally, the number of electrons is equal to the number of
protons and the number of neutrons is also equal to the number of protons. However, there are
atoms that sometimes have the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons.
These are called isotopes.
