Class 9 Geography India – Size and Location

'India's position'

1). India is a big country. India is located in the Northern Hemisphere and its main part is from
8°4'N to 37°6'N latitude and 68°7'E to 97°25'E longitude.
2). The Tropic of Cancer divides India into almost two equal parts at 23°30' North.
Note:- Tropic of Cancer passes through the states of Gujarat, Rajasthan, MadhyaPradesh,
Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, West Bengal,Tripura and Mizoram.
3). To the southeast of the mainland lies the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in the Bay of Bengal
and to the southwest lies the Lakshadweep Islands in the Arabian Sea.

'Size of India'

1). The total area of India's land area is about 32.8 lakh square kilometers.
Note: The southernmost point of the Indian Union State, which was called Indira Bindu, was
submerged in the sea in 2004 due to tsunami waves.
2). The area of India is 2.4% percent of the total geographical area of the world.
3). India is the seventh largest country in the world.
4). India has a land boundary line of about 15,200 km and a coastline of 7516.6 km along the
Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep group.
5). The Young fold mountain (The Himalays) is on the North West, North and North East border
of India.
6). The land south of India is wider in the north and narrows towards the Indian Ocean from 22
degree north latitude.
7) The Arabian Sea lies in the west of India and the Bay of Bengal in the east.
Note :The maritime boundary of India is up to 12 nautical miles i.e. about 21.9 km from the
mainland.
8). There is a difference of 2 hours in the local time from Gujarat to Arunachal Pradesh, so the
longitude 82°30' East is considered as the standard meridian of India, which passes through
Mirzapur in Uttar Pradesh.

9). Latitude affects the duration of day and night from south to north.

'India and the World'

1). India is situated between the east and west of the continent of Asia.

2). The Indian Ocean which joins European countries in the west and East Asian countries gives India a
central position.
3). The plateau to the south extends vertically into the Indian Ocean. and the countries of West Asia,
Africa and Europe, as well as countries in East Asia, maintain close ties through the East Coast.
4). The Indian Ocean is named after India because the coastline of India is the most adjacent to this ocean.
Note: The opening of the Suez Canal in 1869 reduced the distance between India and Europe by 7000
km.
5). The land routes of India are much older than sea route. Various passes across mountains in the north
have provided passages to the ancient travellers as ocean limited such interaction for a long time.
6). India have propagated the ideas of the Upanishads and the Ramayana, the stories of Panchtantra, the
Indian numerals and the decimal system as well as given spices, muslin and other merchandise to different
countries.
7). Also, the influence of Greek sculpture, and the architectural styles of dome and minarets from West
Asia can be seen in different parts of India.

'India's Neighboring Countries'

India is comprised of 29 states and 7 union territories and shares its land boundary with:
Northwest: Pakistan and Afghanistan North: China, Nepal, Bhutan
East: Myanmar and Bangladesh South: Sri Lanka and Maldives
Sri Lanka is separated from India by a narrow channel of sea formed by the Palk Strait and the Gulf of
Mannar
Maldives Islands are situated to the south of the Lakshadweep Islands.

Note : Before 1947, there were two types of states in India - the provinces and the Princely states.
Provinces were ruled directly by British officials who were appointed by the Viceroy.
