SUSWAGATAM!
"Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experiences of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, vision cleared, ambition inspired and successes achieved."

- Helen Keller

During the inaugural meetings of many a new Chapter, the forty plus aged speakers who felicitate usually utter these words, "I wish we had such organizations that equipped us for tomorrows, in our younger days." They are not just mouthing these words to flatter the persons who have been inducted and installed, but deep in their hearts, they know that they had inadequacies when they took their plunge into this dog eat dog world. Learning through mistakes is good, but prevention is better than cure!
Joining the Jaycee movement may not seem to be an epoch making event, but in due course of time one will realize that knowledge in itself is of no use. It is the application of knowledge that gets you noticed. Jaycees gives you that extra-edge required to get noticed among the plenty. Yes, it makes a player out of you and not just a spectator. However, this needs commitment to the cause of Jayceeism. The cause of Jayceeism is nothing but leadership development. This organization is the only known Leadership University in the world. This University provides informal education to its members to take on the challenges thrown up by this fast paced world. Every area of opportunity in Jaycees provides training to its members. Where else will you get the chance to be the Chief Executive of an organization; may it be at the local, zonal, national or international levels; within the age of forty? Where else will the young leaders get a chance to sharpen their saws to be qualitative? Where else will they get a chance to usher in brotherhood and thus make global citizenship be a reality?
59)/)6 !

Jaycees provide ample opportunities to imbibe the right attitude, skills and provide the necessary knowledge to be the best in whatever one does. SWAGAT is a program that initiates a new member into the wonder world of Jayceeism. By becoming a member, you have just opened the doors to leadership and personal effectiveness, but to be so in life, you will have to actively participate in the programs of the organization. However, there is one guarantee. Give the organization what you can in terms of resources and the results will be multifold. There are many who will stand guarantee for this statement. SWAGAT is a curtain raiser to all those wonderful moments and opportunities you are going to get in this organization. Participate actively and take back this first bumper award from JCI and JCI India. SWAGAT is not the end, but just the beginning of your exciting journey of self realization, personal effectiveness and growth. It is not enough you start off, but you should also maintain the upward climb of your growth graph. Jaycees will also assist you in maintaining yourself and continuously improving upon your previous best. Do not rest on your laurels; there are many who will overtake you. "It isn't the incompetent who destroy an organization. The incompetent never get into a position to destroy it. It is those who have achieved something and want to rest on their achievements that are forever clogging things up." - Henry Ford Be a true Jaycee. Let SWAGAT give you that cutting edge to flag off your journey to achieve success and beyond. Find time to involve. You will never regret it. Happy and exciting participation in SWAGAT. - JCI Sen. G Balachandran, Past Executive Vice President Indian Jaycees & JCI - International Training Fellow

Welcome to SWAGAT! Congratulations on joining the world's largest and greatest youth organization - Junior Chamber, popularly called Jaycees. You have taken the right decision to be a member of the worldwide Federation of young leaders and entrepreneurs. However, it is important for you to know the immense potential of Jaycees, so that you "reap" maximum benefits by "investing" your time, efforts and enthusiasm. In India, workshops, seminars or meetings are generally inaugurated with the lighting of the traditional lamp. However, this simple ritual can appear difficult for the "inaugurator" if the wick of the lamp refuses to be lit. Whenever this happens, some people suggest - "Put the fan off", "check whether there is oil in the lamp", etc. Interestingly, most of the time, the problem occurs because the wick has not been soaked adequately in oil. We too need to be soaked in the spirit of Jayceeism. We need to immerse ourselves into understanding our organisation and making the most of the many opportunities offered by it. The more we are soaked in the spirit of Jaycees, the greater will be our glow of our success. Let's recognize our own potential by understanding the potential of the organization of Jaycees. We have to transform from just being a member to becoming a true Jaycee! SWAGAT is the Indian way of saying, "welcome" This path of Jayceeism that you have chosen to walk on beckons you with an invitation to march ahead in life. It is prudent that you understand the requisites and possibilities of this invitation. Welcome to the organisation of opportunities! May SWAGAT instill in you a deeper understanding of the organisation of Jaycees. May it "touch to transform" you like it has done to millions of youth, right round the globe. After all, "WE ARE THE FUTURE" Regards Pravin K Sabnis

Our Values - THE JAYCEE CREED:

(authored by William Brownfield in 1946)

We believe: that faith in God gives meaning and purpose to human life that the brotherhood of man transcends the sovereignty of nations that economic justice can best be won by free men through free enterprise that government should be of laws rather than of men, that earth's great treasure lies in human personality and that service to humanity is the best work of life

Our Founder's perspective - Henry Gissenbier's vision From within the walls of the soul of this organization, wherein the foundation of character and good citizenship are laid, I hope a message will come in the sometime of tomorrow that will stir the people towards the establishment of a permanent and everlasting world peace

When the great library of Alexandria burned, one of the books that were saved, was bought by a poor man. Between its pages was written the secret of the "Touchstone"! The touchstone was a small pebble that could turn any common metal into pure gold. The writing explained that it was lying among thousands and thousands of other pebbles that looked exactly like it. However, the secret was this: The real stone would feel warm, while ordinary pebbles are cold.
59)/)6 '

The man bought some simple supplies, camped on the seashore, and began testing pebbles. He knew that if he picked up ordinary pebbles and threw them down again because they were cold, he might pick up the same pebble hundreds of times. Therefore, when he felt one that was cold, he threw it into the sea. He spent a whole day doing this but none of them was the touchstone. Yet, he went on and on this way. Pick up a pebble. Cold - throw it into the sea. Pick up another. Throw it into the sea. The days stretched into weeks and the weeks into months. One day, he picked up a pebble and it was warm. He threw it into the sea before he realized what he had done. He had formed such a strong habit of throwing each pebble into the sea that when the one he wanted came along; he still threw it away. Ditto, with opportunity. Unless we are vigilant, it is easy to fail to recognize an opportunity when it is in hand and it is just as easy to throw it away. Most of us are waiting for opportunity to knock on our doors, even if it is standing right before us. Opportunity needs to be recognized by having an open mind. Recognize the opportunities offered by Jaycees, lest they slip by!

Eleanor Roosevelt said: The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.
LEADERSHIP "Leadership is action, not position" is a popular quote. Interestingly most people are on the threshold of leadership opportunity... sometimes disguised as a position; on other occasions it is an invitation for action. Hence, it is prudent to say that leadership is all about action being worthy of a position.
 59)/)6

It is about being a captain who can steer the SHIP towards a progressive destination. The acronym SHIP says it all. S-self, Hhome, I-industry, P-people. Captaining your own SELF is the first step. Here, inculcating the positive attitude habit is of high priority. It is also important to develop our confidence levels to emerge as effective personalities. HOME is the next critical element in leadership. It remains, both, a buffer for stress and a creator for stress (if ignored). Our Relationship management is an essential area that needs to be worked on. Ensure a personal "touch" in your relationships". INDUSTRY symbolizes our career. The question is... are you industrious? Do you have the Desire, the Dedication, the Discipline and the Determination? Ensure that you acquire new and sharpen old skills to optimize your effectiveness. Leading PEOPLE is all about anticipating, planning, visioning, communicating, delegating, team building and team working. Remember that the performance of any leader is as good as the performance of the team that he leads.

SELF-ESTEEM
"Jo til mein hai tel, jo jagmag mein hai aag, tera Sai hai tere andar, jag sake to jaag" (Hindi saying by poet-saint Kabir)
Sesame seeds contain oil within, Flint stones hold potential sparks, Your potential lies within you, awake to this fact. Please note that sesame seeds need to be crushed to produce oil... that flint stones need to struck against each other to create a spark of fire similarly we need to awake ourselves to the potential within us. Self-image is the platform from where all our actions flow. Each action, feeling and behaviour cannot but be consistent with this image on our internal mirrors. To change our results, we must change the negative blueprint we have created over time. Since repetition created the state of our current image, it will also take repetition to change our state of mind from unhealthy to healthy. This is where most of us breakdown. We simply don't muster the stamina or the faith to repeat the right behaviours and action long enough to create a healthy self-image, that can lead us to become more than we think we are. We must build and modify our self-image through positive autosuggestions those words and pictures that trigger the positive images to give us the power to move in the right direction. Over time, these new directions lead us to feel better about ourselves, enhance our character, and release within us the power to be our best. Autosuggestions must be always in present tense, with all positive terms and should be done ideally in the morning from bed and night to bed.

59)/)6

We must move From I think I will try I might May be I hope so Let me see Possibly Perhaps

To I will I can I know Definitely Okay Great Always Absolutely

There is a Hero If you look inside your heart You don't have to be afraid of what you are There is an answer if you reach into your soul And that sorrow that you know will melt away And then a hero comes along with the strength to carry on And you cast your fears aside & you know you can survive So when you feel like hope is gone, look inside you & be strong And you will finally see the truth That the hero lies in you!
BELIEVE IN YOURSELF

(a song by Mariah Carrey)

A water bearer had two large pots, each hung on each end of a pole. One of the pots had a crack in it, and at the end of the long walk from the stream to the master's house, the cracked pot arrived only half full. The poor cracked pot was ashamed of its own imperfection. It spoke to the water bearer one day, "I am ashamed of myself, and I want to apologize to you. I have been able to deliver only half my load because this crack in my side. Because of my flaws, you don't get full value from your efforts," The water bearer replied, "As we return to the master's house, I want you to notice the beautiful flowers along the path. Notice
59)/)6 !

that there were flowers only on your side of your path, but not on the other pot's side. I have always known about your flaw, and I took advantage of it. I planted flower seeds on your side of the path, and every day while we walk back from the stream, you have watered them. You are the cause of the beauty of these lovely flowers." Each of us has our own unique flaws. We are all cracked pots. However, if we will allow it, nothing goes to waste. Do not be afraid of your flaws. Acknowledge them take advantage of them, and you, too, can be the cause of beauty.
The Earth Is Ours the Sky Is Too! Every saint says so Every sage says so If you possess sincerity and daring Eventually, you'll find yourself winning! Don't mind the length of the road Don't tire out under the load Listen to the essence of my words Don't disappoint these inviting roads King of this world... that's you ...Believe this fact to be true Take all troubles head-on.... Never sing a loser's song Why does fear overpower you? This earth is ours, the sky is too! The thoughts in your mind... Are mine too, you'll find Your dreams are akin to my life mission Lamps of hope lit up our vision. May these lamps never wane Come storm, thunder or rain! The skies will sing, fun will gather...Only if you and I call out together The season of flowers shall bloom Bringing happiness and chasing the gloom Together we can create a colourful way...Why do you keep alone and away?

This verse has been transcreated from the "Mitwa" song of Hindi film "Lagaan".

WORTHINESS
Wouldn't you like to receive a shining new Rs 1000/- note. Now, suppose that the note is crumpled you would still want it. Even if the money falls into dirty water and is ground into the floor you will not change your mind. You desire it because of its worth has not been sullied by the dirt. Ditto for us human beings! Many times in our lives, we are dropped, crumpled, and ground into the dirt by the decisions we make and the circumstances that can come our way. We feel as though we are worthless. However, no matter what has happened or what will happen, you will never lose your worth. Nevertheless, it is pertinent to note that the worth of the sullied note does not diminish because it carries the worth of being a currency that is recognized by everybody as having the stated worth. Similarly, we have to confirm our worth by reinforcing our values... our principles and beliefs that influence and determine our responses to different situations. If our values our intact, then our character will be worthy. If our character is worthy, our worth will never be victim to the vagaries of time or situation. Personal worthiness is something that we have chosen for ourselves. Personal worthiness is a value we can attach to ourselves. USE-LESS! National President of the Indian Jaycees in the year 2000, Mukhinder Singh uses humour in a most effective manner in his speeches. One such story drew great laughter and even greater learning. A robust man called up the police to complain about a robbery at his house. The thieves were a couple of thin and rather weak men armed with only a small knife. The constable was amazed to write down a seemingly unending list of valuables
59)/)6 #

burgled In exasperation he asked, "Did they leave any valuable behind?" The complainant promptly replied, "my pistol worth Rs 80,000/-" The cop was curious, "How did they miss the gun?" The beaming complainant said, "I was sitting on it." The shocked officer asked, "Why didn't you use it to stop the thieves?" The man sheepishly replied, "Oh, it never occurred to me? I was too worried that they might see it and steal it because of its expensive worth" It is pertinent to note that a thing intended for his protection was useless because it was not used. His "touching" the gun and using it would have "transformed" his predicament. We may laugh, but it is true that we could well be like the man who did not use what he had! For instance, our ability to smile can "touch to transform" a difficult situation. Nevertheless, it is in a difficulty that the smile is not used! We possess knowledge and skills, a brain and a heart, our senses and our emotions. We have abilities. We have potential. There is so much that we possess. However, if we do not use the things we have, then the most valuable of our qualities and our strengths are of no use. More importantly, it is not enough to only "use" but also to use "enough". It is pertinent to note that if you "use less" then our strengths are rendered "useless"!

WE ARE THE FUTURE

Not just U or I Not just he or she, but WE We work as a team We live by our creed, coz we believe that We are, we are the future (4) We have the power, we have the strength We'll finish the race, no matter the length We work together, a team as a whole Accepting every challenge, every aim and every goal The future's unknown, it's a story untold It's a movie unseen, to be made by you and me No matter what they tell you, our future is bright We'll face every hurdle; we'll climb up the height From cities and towns, here we've come Together as one, to build our nation Young women and men, walking hand in hand We stand by our creed, proud to be Jaycees!

ATTITUDE
There was a man who made a living selling balloons at a fair. He had all colors of balloons, including red, yellow, blue, and green. Whenever business was slow, he would release a gasfilled balloon into the air and when the children saw it go up, they all wanted to buy one. They would come up to him, buy a balloon, and his sales would go up again. He continued this process all day. One day he felt someone tugging at his shirt. He turned around and saw a little boy who asked, "If you release a black balloon, would that also fly?" Moved by the boy's concern, the man replied with empathy, "Son, it is not the colour of the balloon, it is what is inside that makes it go up." The same thing applies to our lives. It is what is inside that counts. The thing inside of us that makes us go up is our attitude. Attitude, as you have heard many times, is everything. Your attitude is your own personal filter for everything that happens to you, around you, or within you. What takes place in this world is not as important as how you view it. You cannot choose what will happen to you. You cannot guarantee success and happiness for yourself. These things are out of your control. However, you can choose how you feel about these things, about how you respond to these situations. With a positive attitude, you will have the ability to be happier each day, make others around you happier, and live a good life. Below are seven tips that can help you keeping your positive attitude going. 1. PUT THINGS IN PERSPECTIVE When you find your mood is taking a turn for the worse, take a step back and put things into perspective. Is the stress and frustration really worth it? When you look at the bigger picture, don't they seem a bit insignificant? They should, because nine
59)/)6 '

times out of ten the daily problems we face are not really that important when we look at life as a whole. You are alive; you have food, shelter, and freedom. These things are reason enough to smile when you wake in the morning. 2. HAVE SOMETHING TO LOOK FORWARD TO You are expecting something in the mail. Then, finally, it comes! People love to look forward to things. Some say that anticipation of something happening is better than when it actually happens. We all have special events that are coming up. Holidays, birthdays, vacations, weekends, etc. Keeping these in mind will give you something to stay excited about. 3. HELP OTHERS There is no better way to forget about your worries than to help someone else with theirs. When you take the focus off yourself, and give your attention to helping people, your attitude will change dramatically. This tip not only includes helping friends and family, but also volunteering to help those in need that you may not know. When you give of yourself, you will receive tenfold in return. 4. TAKE A BREAK There are times when the only solution is to get away from it all. If you know that you are in a negative mood, or have been in low spirits for some time, take a break. It could be just what you need. Taking a break can vary from a short trip to a vacation. A walk around the neighbourhood can also work wonders for your mood and attitude. 5. TALK WITH A POSITIVE FRIEND Talking things out can help you see the good in a bad situation. Call a friend and tell them about your problem, or just chat about any topic that comes to you. This is a very therapeutic and effective cure to a rough day.
 59)/)6

6. LIFE IS SHORT One thing to always remember is that life is short. The worst thing would be to look back on your days wishing you could have been happier. Now is the time to take a good look at your attitude and make the necessary improvements. Days, weeks, months, and years have a way of rushing by. Do not let them pass while you are in a negative mood about life. Look back with no regrets, only happy memories. 7. PEOPLE HAVE DONE MORE WITH LESS A common cause for a poor attitude is the feeling that you are in a situation that is just too hard to deal with. People have done more with less. Many people from all over the world have overcome obstacles, solved problems, and maintained a positive attitude through the most trying of times. If they can do it, so can you. The power of a positive attitude is always within your reach. You simply have to extend your hand and grab it. Use the tips above to gain a great attitude, and to make your life happier, healthier, and wealthier. WHERE THERE IS A WILL, THERE IS A WAY There was a man who worked for the railway maintenance yard. One day as he went into the freezer compartment to do his routine work, the door accidentally closed and he found himself trapped in the compartment. He shouted for help but no one heard him since it was past midnight. He tried to break down the door but he could not. As he lay in the freezer compartment, he began to feel colder, and colder. Then he began to feel weaker, and weaker, and he wrote on the wall of the compartment, "I am feeling colder, and colder; and I am getting weaker, and weaker. I am dying, and this may be my last words" In the morning when the other workers opened up the compartment
59)/)6

they found him dead. The sad twist to the above story is that the freezing apparatus in the compartment had broken down a few days earlier. The poor worker did not know about the damaged freezing apparatus and in his mind the freezing apparatus was working perfectly. He felt cold, got weaker and literally willed himself to die. Our sub-conscious mind can be cheated. The sub-conscious mind can only accept and act on information passed to it by the conscious mind. It has no capacity to reject or decline any instructions or information passed to it by the conscious mind. In the case of the poor worker, he consciously thought that he was getting colder, weaker and dying and the sub-conscious mind accepted the above instructions and affected his physical body. That was how he willed himself to die. It is important to inculcate a sense of true belief that invigorates instead of blind belief that defeats! "What the mind can conceive, the man can achieve".

GOAL SETTING

Planning to Live Your Life Your Way

Goal setting is a formal process for personal planning. By setting goals on a routine basis you decide what you want to achieve, and then move step-by-step towards the achievement of these goals. The process of setting goals and targets allows you to choose where you want to go in life. By knowing precisely what you want to achieve, you know what you have to concentrate on to do it. You also know what merely a distraction is. Goal setting is a standard technique used by top-level athletes, successful business-people and achievers in all fields. It gives you long-term vision and short-term motivation. It focuses your acquisition of knowledge and helps you to organize your resources. By setting sharp, clearly defined goals, you can measure and take pride in the achievement of those goals. You can see forward progress in what might previously have seemed a long pointless grind. By setting goals, you will also raise your self-confidence, as you recognize your ability and competence in achieving the goals that you have set. The process of achieving goals and seeing this achievement gives you confidence that you will be able to achieve higher and more difficult goals. Goals are set on a number of different levels: First you decide what you want to do with your life and what large-scale goals you want to achieve. Second, you break these down into the
59)/)6 !

smaller and smaller targets that you must hit so that you reach your lifetime goals. Finally, once you have your plan, you start working towards achieving it. Start to Set Personal Goals To give a broad, balanced coverage of all important areas in your life, try to set goals in some or all of the following categories: Artistic: Do you want to achieve any artistic goals? If so, what? Attitude: Is any part of your mindset holding you back? Is there any part of the way that you behave that upsets you? If so, set a goal to improve your behavior or find a solution to the problem. Career: What level do you want to reach in your career? Education: Is there any knowledge you want to acquire in particular? What information and skills will you need to achieve other goals? Family: Do you want to be a parent? If so, how are you going to be a good parent? How do you want to be seen by a partner or by members of your extended family? Financial: How much do you want to earn by what stage? Physical: Are there any athletic goals you want to achieve? Do you want good health into old age? What steps are you going to take to achieve this? Pleasure: How do you want to enjoy yourself? - You should ensure that some of your life is for you! Public Service: Do you want to make the world a better place by your existence? If so, how?

Once you have decided your goals in these categories, assign a priority to them from A to F. Then review the goals and reprioritize until you are satisfied that they reflect the shape of
" 59)/)6

the life that you want to lead. Also ensure that the goals that you have set are the goals that you want to achieve, not what your parents, spouse, family, or employers want them to be. How to Start to Achieve Your Lifetime Goals Once you have set your lifetime goals, set a 20-year plan of smaller goals that you should complete if you are to reach your lifetime plan. Then set a 5-year plan, 1-year plan, 6-month plan, and 1 month plan of progressively smaller goals that you should reach to achieve your lifetime goals. Each of these should be based on the previous plan. Finally set a daily to-do list of things that you should do today to work towards your lifetime goals. At an early stage these goals may be to read books and gather information on the achievement of your goals. This will help you to improve the quality and realism of your goal setting. Finally review your plans, and make sure that they fit the way in which you want to live your life. Staying on Course Once you have decided your first set of plans, keep the process going by reviewing and updating your to-do list on a daily basis. Periodically review the longer-term plans, and modify them to reflect your changing priorities and experience. Setting Goals Effectively State each goal as a positive statement: 'Execute this technique well' is a much better goal than 'Don't make this stupid mistake' Be precise: Set a precise goal, putting in dates, time and amounts so that you can measure achievement. If you do this, you will know exactly when you have achieved the goal, and can take complete satisfaction from having achieved it. Set priorities: When you have several goals, give each a priority. This helps you to avoid feeling overwhelmed by
59)/)6 #

too many goals, and helps to direct your attention to the most important ones. Write goals down: this crystallizes them and gives them more force. Keep operational goals small: Keep the low-level goals you are working towards small and achievable. If a goal is too large, then it can seem that you are not making progress towards it. Keeping goals small and incremental gives more opportunities for reward. Derive today's goals from larger ones. Set performance goals, not outcome goals: You should take care to set goals over which you have as much control as possible. There is nothing more dispiriting than failing to achieve a personal goal for reasons beyond your control. These could be bad business environments, poor judging, bad weather, injury, or just plain bad luck. If you base your goals on personal performance, then you can keep control over the achievement of your goals and draw satisfaction from them. Set realistic goals: It is important to set goals that you can achieve. All sorts of people can set unrealistic goals for you. They will often do this in ignorance of your own desires and ambitions. Alternatively you may be nave in setting very high goals. You might not appreciate either the obstacles in the way, or understand quite how many skills you must master to achieve a particular level of performance. Do not set goals too low: Just as it is important not to set goals unrealistically high, do not set them too low. People tend to do this where they are afraid of failure or where they are lazy! You should set goals so that they are slightly out of your immediate grasp, but not so far that there is no hope of achieving them.

Achieving Goals When you have achieved a goal, take time to enjoy the satisfaction of having done so. Absorb the implications of the goal achievement, and observe the progress you have made towards other goals. If the goal was a significant one, reward yourself appropriately. With the experience of having achieved this goal, review the rest of your goal plans: If you achieved the goal too easily, make your next goals harder If the goal took a dispiriting length of time to achieve, make the next goals a little easier If you learnt something that would lead you to change other goals, do so If while achieving the goal you noticed a deficit in your skills, decide whether to set goals to fix this.

Failure to meet goals does not matter as long as you learn from it. Feed lessons learned back into your goal-setting program. Remember that your goals will change as you mature. Adjust them regularly to reflect this growth in your personality. If goals do not hold any attraction any longer, then let them go. Goal setting is your servant, not your master. It should bring you real pleasure, satisfaction and a sense of achievement. Example: The best example of goal setting that you can have is to try setting your own goals. Set aside two hours to think through your lifetime goals in each of the categories. Then work back through the 20-year plan, 5-year plan, 1-year plan, 6-month plan, a 1month plan. Finally draw up a To Do List of jobs to do tomorrow to move towards your goals. Tomorrow, do those jobs, and start to use goal-setting routinely!

ACTION PLAN
Deciding Your Work Priorities- Finding Out What to Spend Your Time On An important part of focusing on results is working out what to focus on! Many people work very hard all day doing little jobs that do not actually affect the quality of their work. Doing what you enjoy It is important for your own quality of life that you enjoy your job. If you know broadly what you like and dislike, you will be more able to move your job towards doing things that you enjoy. This is important as you are much more likely to do your job effectively if you love it than if you loathe it. Note that almost every job has tedious or unpleasant elements to it - it is important that these parts are done properly. It is up to you over time to minimize this. Concentrating on your strengths It is also important to know what your talents and weaknesses are. A good way of doing this is to carry out a SWOT analysis. This provides a formal approach to evaluating your strengths and weaknesses, and the opportunities and threats that you face. It makes a lot of sense to find a job that suits your strengths, and where your weaknesses do not matter. Understanding how to be excellent at your job You should ask the following questions: What is the purpose of the job? If possible, express this in a single sentence starting with the word 'To' - for example 'To ensure effective distribution in South India...'

What are the measures of success? Work out how your employer will decide whether you are good at your job or not. Find out what the key targets to be achieved are, and how achievement will be measured. What is exceptional performance? Find out what this is considered to be, and work out how to achieve it. What are the priorities and deadlines? You need to know this so that when you are overloaded with work, you know what to focus on. What resources are available? This ensures that you are using all the tools at your command. What costs are acceptable? This lets you know the boundaries within which you can move. How does this relate to other people? What is the broader picture within which you have to work?

If you have answers to these questions, you will know how to do your job in precisely the right way. If you know what exceptional performance is, you can plan to achieve it using all the resources you have available.

TIME MANAGEMENT
Personal time management skills are essential skills for effective people. People who use these techniques routinely are the highest achievers in all walks of life, from business to sports to public service. If you use these skills well, then you will be able to function effectively, even under intense pressure. At the heart of time management is an important shift in focus: Concentrate on results, not on being busy Many people spend their days in a frenzy of activity, but achieve very little because they are not concentrating on the right things. The 80:20 Rule This is neatly summed up in the Pareto Principle, or the '80:20 Rule'. This argues that typically 80% of unfocussed effort generates only 20% of results. The remaining 80% of results are achieved with only 20% of the effort. While the ratio is not always 80:20, this broad pattern of a small proportion of activity generating non-scalar returns is a recurring formula. You can optimize your effort to ensure that you concentrate as much of your time and energy as possible on the high payoff tasks. This ensures that you achieve the greatest benefit possible with the limited amount of time available to you. Priorities Concentrating on what you enjoy Using a SWOT analysis to work out your strengths and weaknesses. This helps you to play to your strengths, minimize weaknesses, and move in the right direction. Finally it explains how to clarify your job with your employer, and concentrate on doing well in the areas he or she considers to be most important.

By concentrating on the right priorities you will ensure that you are always working as effectively as possible. Prioritized To-Do Lists are fundamentally important to efficient work. If you use To-Do Lists, you will ensure that: You remember to carry out all necessary tasks You tackle the most important jobs first, and do not waste time on trivial tasks. You do not get stressed by a large number of unimportant jobs.

To draw up a Prioritized To-Do List, list all the tasks you must carry out. Mark the importance of the task next to it, with a priority from A (very important) to F (unimportant). Redraft the list into this order of importance. Now carry out the jobs at the top of the list first. These are the most important, most beneficial tasks to complete.

"The value of time is in everybody's mouth but few people's practice."

- Lord Chesterfield.

"It is not enough to be busy... the question is what are we busy about." "He who gains time, gains everything."

- Thoreau.

LEISURE
by William Henry Davies

What is life if, full of care, We have no time to stand and stare. No time to stand beneath the boughs And stare as long as sheep or cows. No time to see, when woods we pass, Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass. No time to see, in broad daylight, Streams full of stars, like skies at night. No time to turn at Beauty's glance, And watch her feet, how they can dance. No time to wait till her mouth can Enrich that smile her eyes began. A poor life this if, full of care, We have no time to stand and stare.

HAPPY ENTREPRENEURSHIP

As a young entrepreneur, there are certain business related and personal related obstacles you will have to endure in order to become successful. Some factors are real, such as where you will get your initial funding and where you will find time to manage your business, family, and school responsibilities all at once. Other factors are nothing more than self-inflicted obstacles such as worrying about your age or experience level when dealing with a possible client. These are nothing more than mental games you will play with yourself that will hinder your performance and success. As a young entrepreneur, you must overcome in order to (over)achieve. In your first attempt at building a successful business you will undoubtedly come across times of trouble. To pre-empt feelings of failure during these inevitable situations, begin by taking a walk around the local mall. There you will find many of your peers working in jobs that they do not enjoy. These jobs will never serve a purpose in their lives other than paying for their current expenses. At the super market you will also find others, much older than you, working in dead-end jobs in which they have no control over their future or their success. They wake up, go to work, come home, go to sleep and start over again in the morning. You, however, are involved in a dynamic business experience that will help you throughout your life. Your age
!" 59)/)6

should never concern you. It should be used to your advantage rather than becoming a detriment to your success. It is natural for young entrepreneurs to feel insecure about their age when dealing with people that are older. Not only does this type of thinking get you nowhere, it can drive your client prospects to your competition. By bringing up your own insecurities, you may plant that concern in the head of the person you are dealing with. People are worried about whether your service is going to help them or not, not about who is behind it. If you let this type of thinking go on, you will blame any type of failure on your age and inexperience instead of focusing on how to get better. This is a fatal business flaw. Youth should be a business asset rather than a liability. Understand that your youth enables you to do many things in business and take risks that older people in the same position could not. You are young, without a wife and three kids, unlike your competition. You can take chances and not have to worry about feeding your children every day. Your youth grants you energy and a sharp mind. Use these factors to separate yourself from older competitors. You should view yourself as a "young gun" of business and take things head on, because if your business flops, so what? It is prudent to take a step back and evaluate your position before embarking on a business venture. It may be difficult to gain funds for your business and a part time job may be the only way you will be able to achieve your business goals. Not a checking account, but a savings account that you will not withdraw from unless needed to advance your business. Begin to grow your funds in the bank while your business is still young. As you grow and expand the money can be used and replaced. Also be sure to save as much of your paycheck as you can while being able to pay your everyday expenses. As your business grows and
59)/)6 !#

you are able to support yourself, you should then focus your attention fully on developing your business. As you begin your venture, know that you have already succeeded. It is the entrepreneurial spirit and will that will help you throughout your life. Even if your business is unable to stay afloat, know that you gained more business experience than your colleagues have in the classroom alone. As long as you use your youth to your advantage, stay aggressive and keep thinking positively, you will have a successful run. Never stop promoting yourself and your business and never be afraid of success! Good luck! LEARN FROM THE AUTHOR OF "THINK AND GROW RICH" This account is about the great personal development guru Napoleon Hill. Born to a poor family, he fought his way out of his backwoods Virginia town with a burning desire to be successful. He was always searching for ways to improve himself and was involved in numerous ventures, including managing a coalmine, practicing law, and becoming a business journalist. His big break came at a meeting with Andrew Carnegie, the "Steel King". Carnegie asked Napoleon if he would take up the challenge of devoting 20 years of his life in order to prepare a formula of success for helping others to become successful. Carnegie would provide him with letters of reference to meet hundreds of successful people in the likes of Woodrow Wilson, Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, Theodore Roosevelt, John D. Rockefeller, to name a few. Napoleon made his decision to take up the challenge in less than 60 seconds. Later he came to know that Carnegie had given him 60 seconds to make up his mind, failing which he would have lost his chance of undertaking the important assignment. After 20 years of dedicated research, he compiled the best seller, Think and Grow Rich, in 1937.

It is pertinent to note that successful people make up their mind fast, but are slow at changing their mind once they make their decision. Others tend to be slow at making up their mind and quick to change after the decision is made. In fact, most people do not make their own decisions, because their decisions are made for them or influenced by others. We need to take timely decisions to realise our dreams and for that to happen we need to believe in our dreams. Let's draw inspiration from Napoleon Hill's immortal words, "Whatever the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can achieve." The key word here is "believe".

TWO GREAT INDIAN ICONS FOR EVERY ENTREPRENEUR:

JAMSHEDJI TATA Jamshedji Tata wanted to make textiles in Nagpur in the 1800s with the cotton grown there. Nagpur had no textile industry then, and in Manchester Jamsedji was told that Nagpur's weather was not suitable as it was too dry. He said, 'Alright, I will bring the Manchester weather to Nagpur.' He imported humidifiers and started India's first textile mill in 1874. Jamshedji started the Tata Iron and Steel Company and wanted to export steel rails to Britain. A Britisher called Sir Frederick Upcourt scoffed, 'If Tatas make steel rails to British specifications, I will undertake to eat every pound of rail that they make.' History stands testimony to the fact that Tatas did manage to make steel rails and export them to Britain. No accounts are available about Upcourt' tryst with gastric challenges. In fact, World War II British tanks were called Tatanagars because the steel was made in Tatanagar. Jamshedji pursued his dreams, put together a team, raised the capital, created a product, and mainstreamed it. He did it sitting in India 125 years ago when India's technical capabilities were far less than they are now. When you dream a big dream, surely some of it gets translated into reality. If you do not dream at all, what do you finally get in reality? A century ago, Jamshedji took some foreign visitors to the Majestic Hotel in Mumbai but was denied entrance because he was an Indian. Jamshedji simply resolved to build a hotel that was even finer, and which would not discriminate against people based on colour or race.

V J KURIEN In the 70's, milk was sold in glass bottles at milk booths. However, due to the shortage of milk, only one bottle would be given at a time and one had to come back in the queue for another bottle. People would start queuing up as early as 4 am in the morning, since the early ones improved their chances of getting more bottles Some people started "fixing" their position in the queue by marking their position with a stone, so that they could do other chores till the milk van came and some persons would throw way these stones and "usurp" a "better" position in the queue. My childhood was full of incidents of "gentlemen" and "ladies" fighting out, every morning over missing stones at the milk booth. However, today our country is a world leader in the production, distribution and consumption of milk. Today, milk is available in abundance and more importantly at any time of the day, anytime of the year. All this transformation was possible due to the visionary touch of V J Kurien. AMUL - Kurien's mission started as awareness among the farmers and matured into a protest movement against the exploitation by the private traders and middlemen who controlled the marketing and distribution system. AMUL inspired many more milk co-operatives all around the country that have made life easier for the consumer by empowering the farmer who collects milk. AMUL is the story of the vision of Kurien and all those who believed in it. AMUL is the story of transforming seemingly impossible dreams by touching our inner resolves and sharing a lofty mission all because a man called Kurien believed that nothing is impossible if you back the vision of your dreams with a mission plan in action.

"Everything is possible, especially the impossible"!

PAY HEED TO THE WORDS OF ABDUL KALAM, PRESIDENT OF INDIA:

I was in Hyderabad giving this lecture, when a 14-year-old girl asked me for my autograph. I asked her what her goal in life is. She replied: I want to live in a developed India. For her, you and I will have to build this developed India. You must proclaim. India is not an under-developed nation; it is a highly developed nation. ==> YOU say that our government is inefficient. ==> YOU say that our laws are too old. ==> YOU say that the municipality does not pick up the garbage. ==> YOU say that the phones don't work; the railways are a joke, the airline is the worst in the world, mails never reach their destination. ==> YOU say that our country has been fed to the dogs and is the absolute pits. YOU say, say and say What do YOU do about it? Take a person on his way to Singapore. Give him a name...YOURS. Give him a face...YOURS ==> YOU walk out of the airport and you are at your International best. - In Singapore you don't throw cigarette butts on the roads or eat in the stores. ==> YOU are as proud of their Underground Links as they are. ==> You pay $5 (approx. Rs.60) to drive through Orchard Road (equivalent of Mahim Causeway or Pedder Road) between 5 PM and 8 PM. ==> YOU comeback to the parking lot to punch your parking ticket if you have over-stayed. In Singapore you don't say anything, DO YOU? ==> YOU wouldn't dare to eat in public during Ramadan, in Dubai. ==> YOU would not dare to go out without your head covered in Jeddah. ==> YOU would not dare to buy an employee of the telephone exchange in London at 10 pounds (Rs.650) a month to, "see to it that my STD and ISD calls are billed to someone else."
" 59)/)6

==> YOU would not dare to speed beyond 55mph (88 km/h) in Washington and then tell the traffic cop, "Jaanta hai main kaun hoon (Do you know who I am?). I am so and so's son. ==> YOU wouldn't chuck an empty coconut shell anywhere other than the garbage pail on the beaches in Australia and New Zealand. Why don't YOU spit Paan on the streets of Tokyo? Why don't YOU use examination jockeys or buy fake certificates in Boston????? ==> We are still talking of the same YOU. YOU can respect and conform to a foreign system in other countries but cannot in your own. You throw papers and cigarettes on the road the moment you touch the Indian ground. If you can be an involved and appreciative citizen in an alien country, why cannot you be the same here in India? Once in an interview, the ex-municipal Commissioner of Bombay, Mr.Tinaikar, had a point to make. "Rich people's dogs are walked on the streets to leave their affluent droppings all over the place," he said. "And then the same people turn around to criticize and blame the authorities for inefficiency and dirty pavements. What do they expect the officers to do? Go down with a broom every time their dog feels the pressure in his bowels? In America every dog owner has to clean up after his pet has done the job. Same in Japan. Will the Indian citizen do that here?" We go to the polls to choose a Government and after that forfeit all responsibility. We sit back wanting to be pampered and expect the government to do everything for us whilst our contribution is totally negative. We expect the government to clean up but we are not going to stop chucking garbage all over the place nor are we going to stop to pickup a stray piece of paper and throw it in the bin. We expect the railways to provide clean bathrooms but we are not going to learn the proper use of bathrooms.

"

We want Indian Airlines and Air India to provide the best of food and toiletries but we are not going to stop pilfering at the least opportunity. This applies even to the staff that is known not to pass on the service to the public. When it comes to burning social issues like those related to women, dowry, girl child and others, we make loud drawing room protestations and continue to do the reverse at home. Our excuse? "It's the whole system which has to change, how will it matter if I alone forego my son's rights to a dowry." So who's going to change the system? What does a system consist of? Very conveniently for us it consists of our neighbours, other households, other cities, other communities and the government. But definitely not me and YOU. When it comes to us actually making a positive contribution to the system we lock ourselves along with our families into a safe cocoon and look into the distance at countries far away and wait for a Mr. Clean to come along & work miracles for us with a majestic sweep of his hand or we leave the country and run away. Like lazy cowards hounded by our fears we run to America to bask in their glory and praise their system. - When New York becomes insecure we run to England. When England experiences unemployment, we take the next flight out to the Gulf. When the Gulf is war struck, we demand to be rescued and brought home by the Indian government. Everybody is out to abuse and rape the country. Nobody thinks of feeding the system. Our conscience is mortgaged to money. I am echoing J.F. Kennedy's words to his fellow American to relate to Indians? "ASK WHAT WE CAN DO FOR INDIA AND DO WHAT HAS TO BE DONE TO MAKE INDIA WHAT AMERICA AND OTHER WESTERN COUNTRIES ARE TODAY" Let's do what India needs from us. - APJ Abdul Kalam President, Republic of India
