M1: While Task - Activity 4

Motive Questions: After reading the essay, test your comprehension and
retention by answering the following questions:

1) Analyze how exhaustion impairs your ability to succeed in school.

- Exhaustion which is a common problem for most students when going to school
results in lower ability to succeed in school. It affects their daily activities in school
such as their ability to concentrate causing their grades to suffer and could
potentially affect their mental health.

2) Identify the form of beginning, the paragraph development, and the form of
ending employed in the essay.
- The form of beginning used in the paragraph is the use of quotation, the quote
“Early to bed, early to rise; makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.” was used to
begin the paragraph.
- The type of paragraph development is a problem-solution pattern. In this case, the
problem was first stated in the first paragraphs and the paragraphs to follow were
solution to that problem.
- Finally, the author ended it off with a revised version of the quotation he used in
the first paragraph “A balanced day of a healthy diet, regular exercise, and a restful
sleep makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise.”

3) State the thesis statement in the essay.

- The thesis statement of the essay is ““A balanced day of a healthy diet, regular
exercise, and a restful sleep makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise.”

4) Pick the first and second solutions the author has presented to get rid of
exhaustion and overcome the problem of sleepiness.
- The first solution the author presented is to have a healthy diet. Low sugar cereals
and low-fat milk/yogurt or juice for breakfast, a light lunch containing carbohydrates
(bread, rice) and protein (chicken, fish), and munch on healthy snacks like fruits and
vegetables instead of candies and sweets.
- The second solution the author presented is exercise. Exercising promotes blood
flow and releases energizing hormones and the happy hormone called endorphins,
which elevates our mood and produces feelings of well-being.

5) Cite the paragraphs in which the author addressed the issues associated with
diet.
- Cited from Paragraph 2 of Zap the Zombie Syndrome by Tufts, J. (N/A). “A healthy
diet can be the first way to fight energy lows. Students should start the day with a
light breakfast that combines low-sugar cereals and low-fat milk or yogurts.” As an
additional she also stated on the same paragraph that “Preferably, students should
choose juice or milk over coffee in the morning because caffeine, found in coffee, is
a serious drug that brings exhausting roller coaster energy highs and lows. It is also
essential to combine carbohydrates and proteins for a light lunch, to ensure
long-lasting, sleep-fighting energy. After school, the best things to munch on are
fruits, pretzels, fresh vegetables, or granola instead of sugar-rich candies and sweets.

Snacks that are healthy help provide a steady supply of energy for the rest of the
day.” As a recommendation for the students.

- Cited from Paragraph 3 of Zap the Zombie Syndrome by Tufts, J. (N/A). “It is also
important, to pump water into the system even when one is not thirsty. Dehydration
is common in teens and can cause crankiness and fatigue. At least six cups of water a
day, when combined with at least two of the above tips, is sure to produce rising
energy levels.”

6) State the last problem the author cited, and identify the form of ending utilized
in the essay.
- The last problem the author cited is about insomnia and also included unique ways
that students discovered to help with insomnia such as putting a stress-relieving
cucumber gel on their eyes. As stated in the previous questions, the form of ending
utilized in the essay is the use of quotation. The quotation used to end the essay was
a revised version of quotation found in the first essay - “A balanced day of a healthy
diet, regular exercise, and a restful sleep makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise.”
