Objectives to be assessed

By the end of the week, learners must be able to;

 Explain how each tree/herb is used to cure the diseases or illnesses.
 Give some recommendations on how to preserve trees/herbs for the benefit of the community.

It has been noted that a lot of helpful trees/herbs lie in the forest unutilised and yet people are facing difficulties in trying to
raise lots of money to pay for medication from pharmacies.

Teacher’s notes

 The teacher liaise with the local leadership and parents so that learners are granted permission to carry out the
research in the local fields.
 Teacher to make some arrangements with the resource person, i.e. the Traditional Healers in the area to assist the
learners in carrying out their research.
 Teacher to monitor the learners as they carry out the research.

BACKGROUND

The teacher has noted that a lot of helpful trees/herbs lie in the forest unutilised and yet people are facing difficulties in
trying to raise lots of money to pay for medication from pharmacies. Therefore, you are required to carry out a research to
find out different trees/herbs that helps in incurring diseases or illnesses.

Activities

1. Design an interview guide that you will use to collect data on at least 5 trees/herbs that are helping to cure different
diseases or illnesses in your locality. [5]
2. From the information obtained in Activity 1 above present your findings on diseases or illnesses each tree/herb cures.
Attach a sample of each herb against a disease it cures. [10]
3. Write a brief explanation on how each tree/herb is used to cure the named disease or illness. [10]
4. Produce a report on the benefits of the trees/herbs to the community and suggest some recommendations on the
preservation of trees/herbs for the benefit of the present and future generation. [10]

MARKING GUIDE
1. Design an interview guide that you will use to collect data on at least 5 trees/herbs that are helping to cure different

Marks will only be awarded to an interview guide with relevant questions such as

 Common trees/herbs available in the locality


 Diseases/illnesses cured by each herb
 How the trees/herbs are obtained
 How the trees/herbs are used to cure the diseases or illnesses etc.

2. From the information obtained in Activity 1 above present your findings on diseases or illnesses each tree/herb cures.

A table is the most preferable technique used to present the data obtained. A sample of a herb to be attached against each
disease it cures.

3. Write a brief explanation on how each tree/herb is used to cure the named disease or illness. [10]
2 marks are awarded for a clear explanation on how each tree/herb is used to cure a disease or illness.

4. Produce a report on the benefits of the trees/herbs to the community and suggest some recommendations on the
preservation of trees/herbs for the benefit of the present and future generation. [10]
