COMPONENT D
LEARNING AREA: MATHEMATICS COMPONENT D

LEVEL: FORM 4

SYLLABUS TOPIC: MENSURATION SOLID SHAPES

SUB-TOPIC: VOLUME

TITLE: MAKING A BOX WITH A VOLUME OF 30CM3

COMPETENCE SKILLS:

 Measuring skills
 Designing skills
 Calculation skills
 Problem solving

BACKGROUND
For years the school authorities, learners and teachers have been facing
challenges on storage containers. The school need to improvise on storage
containers that can be used to store books and various important
documents.

You are therefore required to make a model box that can be made with
locally available resources to solve this problem.
THE CALA
You are to carry out the activities in two parts. i.e Part A and Part B.

PART A

 Chose dimension that you are going to use to make the box with
volume of 30cm3.
 Draw the plan of the box indicating the dimensions on the diagram
 Verify the volume of the box by calculation.
 Chose material that you are going to use.

PART B

 Cut the material into required pieces you need.

 Glue the boards together leaving it without a lid on one surface.
 Indicate length of sides on the box, length, width and height.
 Stick a white paper on it and write your name on it.

HOW YOU WILL BE ASSESSED

You are to be assessed based on your ability to perform the following

activities:

 Choosing correct dimensions. [5]

 Box construction. Accuracy of measurements on the box. [16]
 Box presentation, consistency on measurements on all surfaces. [4]

CALA TIP

- Remember to use correct tools and formulas
