Due date: 04 September 2023

Learning area: Mathematics

CALA TYPE: Pen and paper.

Topic: Measures and mensuration p27; ratios, rates and proportion p3

Subtopic: Perimeter of plane shapes p27; Household budgets p16, Proportions p39

Competencies/Skills

• Critical thinking

• Calculation

• Modelling situations mathematically

• Creativity

• Problem solving

• Knowledge and understanding

Criteria to be assessed

▪ Evidence of knowledge and understanding of plane shapes.

▪ Ability to model the given situation mathematically.

▪ Evidence of knowledge of scales and simple map problems.

▪ The ability to apply concepts of areas of similar shapes.

▪ The ability to organize and present data.

CALA title: Durawall construction.

Objectives

By the end of this CALA learners should be able to:

v Construct and use appropriate mathematical models for a given situation.

v Use appropriate formulae, algorithms and strategies to solve mathematical problems.

Background

Your parents (guardian or landlord) decide to erect a durawall around your residential stand. Three
metres is to be left for a gate and is not considered when doing the calculations. There are two options
to consider, that is option A and option B. You have been tasked to calculate the total cost of erecting
the durawall using both options and to recommend the cheaper option.

CALA Description

➢ This CALA comprises of parts A and B.

➢ The learners are required to respond to both parts.

➢ The CALA is marked out of 20.

➢ This CALA comprises of two parts A and B.

➢ The learners are required to respond to both parts.

➢ The CALA is marked out of 20.

Part A

1. (a) State the shape of the stand and make a sketch of it, indicating its dimensions. [4]

(b) Find the perimeter of the durawall. [3]

Part B

They have two options, A or B, to consider for erecting the durawall.

Option A

They could engage a contractor who charges $15 per metre on a fix and supply basis.

2. Calculate the total cost of erecting the durawall using option A. [2]

Option B

For every stretch of approximately 60m constructed, they could buy the following materials as shown in
the table below and engage a builder who charges $300 labour for every 60m stretch constructed.
ITEM QUANTITY COST per unit

Bricks 5000 $80.00 per 1000

Cement 15 ×50kg bag $12.50 per bag

Brick force 5 bundles $5 per bundle

Pit sand 2 loads $35 per load

3. (a) Using proportion, calculate the quantities of materials that could be needed to cover your
residential stand given in 1(a). Use a table like the one given above. [4]

(b) Using your answers in 3(a), calculate the total cost of erecting the durawall using option B. [4]

4. Your parents decide to use the cheaper option. Calculate the amount they save by using that option.
[3]

How you will be assessed?

Marks will be awarded for:

v stating the shape of your residential stand.

v Making a sketch of the identified stand showing its dimensions.
v Calculating the perimeter of your residential stand less 3m reserved for the gate.
v Calculating total costs of erecting the durawall using both options A and B.
v Calculating the corresponding quantities needed to complete the job at your
place of residence.
v Identifying the cheaper option.

CALA Tips

Remember;

q Formulae for perimeter and shapes.

q How to calculate quantities using proportion.

q 3m of the perimeter of the stand will not be considered in your calculations.
