Introductory Message
This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, dear learners, can
continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities, questions, directions,
exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you to understand each lesson.
Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-by-step
as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.
Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in each SLM.
This will tell you if you need to proceed on completing this module or if you need to
ask your facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for better understanding of the
lesson. At the end of each module, you need to answer the post-test to self-check
your learning. Answer keys are provided for each activity and test. We trust that you
will be honest in using these.
In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teachers are also provided
to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how they can best
help you on your home-based learning.
Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any part of this
SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercise and tests. Read the
instructions carefully before performing each task.
If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in answering the tasks
in this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator.
Thank you.
What I Need to Know
This module provides varied activities that will help you learn about Visualizing the Volume
of a Cube and Rectangular Prism, Naming the Appropriate Unit of Measure used for Measuring
the Volume of Cube and a Rectangular Prism and Converting cu. Cm to cu. M and Vice Versa;
cu. mL to L and Vice Versa.
At the end of this module, you are expected to:
• visualize the volume of a cube and rectangular prism;
• name the appropriate unit of measure used for measuring the volume of cube and
rectangular prism;
• convert cu. Cm to cu. M and vice versa; cu. mL to L and vice versa.
What I Know
A. Direction: Count the cubic units to find the volume of each rectangular
prism.
1. V =
2. V =
1. water in an aquarium
2. a box of milk
3. wooden alphabet block
4. a bag of cement
5. gasoline in a container
1
What’s In
A. Direction: Write the perimeter of the following figure. Count the square units in each
figure.
1. 2. 3.
4. 5.
PERIMETER= PERIMETER=
2
What’s New
The Barangay officials distributed boxes of canned goods to the homes of fire
victims. The boxes were placed in a container van. There are 8 layers of 5
boxes in each 4 rows. How many boxes are there in all? What is the volume of
the container van using the boxes?
What is It
When we are asked to find an amount that will occupy space and not just a surface,
we are being introduced to another application of measurement which is volume.
1 cm

Height
Height
width width
Length Length
A rectangular prism is a solid figure that has 6 faces that are all rectangles.
Opposite faces are congruent and parallel. A cube is a solid figure that has six
faces that are all squares. All faces are congruent and parallel.
V= s x s x s (V=s3)
To get the volume of a rectangular prism, multiply the length, the width and the
height.
V= l x w x h
Example 1:
If each small cube is a cubic unit, how many cubic units are in the figure? How
many cubic units are there in one row? How many rows are there? How many cubic units are
there in all? How many layers are there?
We have,
Cubes per row =3
Number of rows = 3
Number of layers = 3
V= s x s x s (V=s3)
= 3 x 3 x 3 = 27 cubic units
4
Example 2:
2 cm height
5 cm length 4 cm width
Example 3:
How many brown boxes will fit into the white storage bin?
3 m 12 m
8 m 4 m
8m
Solution
1. V= l x w x h
= 24 m x 8 m x 12 m
= 2304 m3
2. V=lxwxh
=8mx4mx3m
= 96 m3
3. Divide 2304 and 96 = 24 brown boxes will fit into the white storage bin.
5
Example 4:
The barangay officials distributed boxes of canned goods and
placed them into a container van with 5 layers of 8 boxes in each 4
rows. Let us visualize the problem.
Understand
a. What is asked?
How many boxes are there in all? What is the volume of the container
using boxes?
b. What are the given facts?
5 layers of 8 boxes in each 4 rows
Plan
Solve
Substitution of the given in the formula.
Simplify the operation
Volume = 5 x 8 x 4
Answer: 160 boxes
6
What’s More
Independent Activity 1
Direction: Count the cubic units to find the volume of each figure.
1) V= 2) V= 3) V=
4) V= 5) V=
7
Independent Assessment 1
3 blocks high
b. What is the volume of the
4 blocks
rectangular prism? deep
5 blocks wide
Liquid Solid
cubic millimeter - mL³ cubic meter - m³
Cubic liter - L³ cubic decimeter - dm³
8
Example 1:
Can you tell the cubic unit of measure to be used in this figure, in words and in
exponential form?
Example 2:
What unit of measure will you use to find the volume of the following?
Let us write the best unit of measure for the capacity of the following;
What’s More
Independent Activity 2
1. container van
2. a pack of juice
3. an ice cube before its melt
4. storage room
5. a soap box
9
Independent Assessment 2
dm3 cm3 m3 mL L kL
1. water in an aquarium
2. a box of milk
3. water tank
4. classroom
5. table
When solving problems involving measurement, you have to work on similar units.
When one object is given in meters, the other should be in meters as well. Otherwise, you
need to convert.
Liquid Solid
1 liter (L) = 100centiliters cL 1 meter (m) = 100 centimeters (cm)
1 liter (L) = 1000 milliliters (mL) 1 meter = 1000 millimeters (mm)
1 kiloliter (kL) = 1000 liters (L) 1 kilometer (km) = 1000 meters (m)
Example 1:
10
Solution
Since: 1 m = 100 cm
1m x 1m x 1m = 100cm x 100cm x 100cm 1 m3 = 1 000 000 cm3
500 cm3 = m3
500 cm = 0.0005 m3
3
1 000 000
How will you compare liters to millilitres? Since liters is larger than
milliliters, we multiply by 1000. Using the conversion 1 L = 1000 mL
54 L x 1000 = 54000 mL
Example 3:
1cm3 = 0.001 L
11
What’s More
Independent Activity 3
1. 16 cm3 = mm3
2. 85000 dm3 = m3
3. 4 L= cL
4. 5000 mL= L
5. 25000 mm3 = cm3
Independent Assessment 3
2. A truck has a volume of 60000 cm3, what is its volume in cubic decimeter?
3. A water tank holds 8 000 L of water, how much water can it hold in cL?
4. A gas chamber can contain 438 m3 of gas. How much gas in dm3 is
needed to fill the chamber?
12
What I Can Do
Direction: Read and solve the following on a separate piece of paper.
2. How much salt is needed to fill a pit that is 1100 centimeters, 9 meters wide and 13 meters
long?
Assessment
A. Direction: Determine how many red packages will fit into the white container:
6m
12 m
4m
24 m
8m
24 m
13
Additional Activities
Directions: Read analyze and solve the problem.
Raf Arvien has a swimming pool in the backyard of their house that measures 10 m long, 5
m wide and 1 m high. Approximately, how much will he be paying for the water supply of
their swimming pool, if the water costs P27. 25 per cubic meter?
