Introductory Message

This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, dear learners, can
continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities, questions, directions,
exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you to understand each lesson.

Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-by-step
as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.

Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in each SLM.
This will tell you if you need to proceed on completing this module or if you need to
ask your facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for better understanding of the
lesson. At the end of each module, you need to answer the post-test to self-check
your learning. Answer keys are provided for each activity and test. We trust that you
will be honest in using these.

In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teachers are also provided
to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how they can best
help you on your home-based learning.

Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any part of this
SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercise and tests. Read the
instructions carefully before performing each task.

If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in answering the tasks
in this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator.

Thank you.

What is It

Visualizing the Volume of a Cube and a Rectangular

When we are asked to find an amount that will occupy space and not just a surface,
we are being introduced to another application of measurement which is volume.

The Figure below is a 3 x 3 x 3 cube that can be manipulated so that

each face of the cube will have the same design.

1 cm

This is a 1 cubic cm box

Height
Height

width width
Length Length
A rectangular prism is a solid figure that has 6 faces that are all rectangles.
Opposite faces are congruent and parallel. A cube is a solid figure that has six
faces that are all squares. All faces are congruent and parallel.

To get the volume of a cube, multiply the three sides of a cube.

V= s x s x s (V=s3)
To get the volume of a rectangular prism, multiply the length, the width and the
height.
V= l x w x h

Example 1:

If each small cube is a cubic unit, how many cubic units are in the figure? How
many cubic units are there in one row? How many rows are there? How many cubic units are
there in all? How many layers are there?

We have,
Cubes per row =3
Number of rows = 3
Number of layers = 3

Count the number of cubes in the figure.

V= s x s x s (V=s3)
= 3 x 3 x 3 = 27 cubic units

4
Example 2:

A box is 5 cm long, 4 cm wide and 2 cm tall. What is the volume?

Let us visualize the problem.

2 cm height

5 cm length 4 cm width

How many small cubes are in each layer?

Count the cubic units to find its volume.
Multiply the length, the width and the height.
V=lxwxh
= 5 cm x 4 cm x 2 cm
V= 40 cm3

Example 3:
How many brown boxes will fit into the white storage bin?

3 m 12 m

8 m 4 m
8m
Solution

1. V= l x w x h
= 24 m x 8 m x 12 m
= 2304 m3

2. V=lxwxh
=8mx4mx3m
= 96 m3

3. Divide 2304 and 96 = 24 brown boxes will fit into the white storage bin.
5
Example 4:
The barangay officials distributed boxes of canned goods and
placed them into a container van with 5 layers of 8 boxes in each 4
rows. Let us visualize the problem.

a. What is asked?
How many boxes are there in all? What is the volume of the container
using boxes?
b. What are the given facts?
5 layers of 8 boxes in each 4 rows
Plan

Strategy: Draw small cubes

Multiply the length, width and height
Volume = l x w x h

Solve
Substitution of the given in the formula.
Simplify the operation
Volume = 5 x 8 x 4
Answer: 160 boxes

Naming the Appropriate Unit of Measure used for Measuring

the Volume of Cube and a Rectangular Prism

What unit of measure will you use in measuring volume?

Volume measures capacity. To measure volume in solid, we use the cube as the unit
of measure. The SI unit of volume is the cube of the SI unit of length, and so it is the cubic
meter (m3) which is used to measure large amount of space occupied. The cubic centimeter
(cm3) and cubic decimeter (dm3) are convenient units of volume. Cubic millimeter is used to
measure small amount of space occupied.
cubic meter (m³) used to measure large amount of space occupied cubic
centimeter (cm³) used to measure small amount of space occupied
cubic liter (L³) used to measure large amount of liquid in a container
cubic milliliter (mL³) used to measure small amount of liquid in a
container

Liquid Solid
cubic millimeter - mL³ cubic meter - m³
Cubic liter - L³ cubic decimeter - dm³

Cubic kiloliter - kL³ cubic centimeter - cm³

Cubic centiliter - cL³

8
Example 1:

Can you tell the cubic unit of measure to be used in this figure, in words and in
exponential form?

cubic centimeter (cm3) cubic meter (m3)

Example 2:
What unit of measure will you use to find the volume of the following?
Let us write the best unit of measure for the capacity of the following;

1. shoe box - cm3 4. a pack juice – mL3

2. door – m3 5. gasoline - L3
3. jewelry box – cm3

Converting cu.cm to cu.m and Vise versa cu.cm to L and

Vice versa

When solving problems involving measurement, you have to work on similar units.
When one object is given in meters, the other should be in meters as well. Otherwise, you
need to convert.

Here are the relationships between some units of measurement:

Liquid Solid
1 liter (L) = 100centiliters cL 1 meter (m) = 100 centimeters (cm)
1 liter (L) = 1000 milliliters (mL) 1 meter = 1000 millimeters (mm)
1 kiloliter (kL) = 1000 liters (L) 1 kilometer (km) = 1000 meters (m)

To convert from a larger to a smaller unit of cubic measure, we

multiply.To convert from a smaller to a larger unit of cubic measure, we
divide.

Example 1:

Convert 500 cm3 to m3.

Which is bigger cm3 or m3?
When we change cm3 to m3, is it from a smaller to larger unit or larger unit to smaller unit?
What process will you use?
To change cubic centimeter to cubic meter, we divide by 100 since a cubic meter is larger
than a cubic centimeter.

10
Solution
Since: 1 m = 100 cm
1m x 1m x 1m = 100cm x 100cm x 100cm 1 m3 = 1 000 000 cm3
500 cm3 = m3
500 cm = 0.0005 m3
3

1 000 000

Example 2: Convert 54 liters to milliliters

How will you compare liters to millilitres? Since liters is larger than
milliliters, we multiply by 1000. Using the conversion 1 L = 1000 mL

54 L x 1000 = 54000 mL

Example 3:

Read and analyze the problem.

A truck delivers vegetables weighing 58 000 000 cm3, what is the

volume of the truck in cubic meter (m3)? To liter?

a. What is asked in the problem? What are given?

b. What must we know to be able to change 58 000 000

cm3 to cubic meters and to cubic liter?

c. Which is larger a cubic centimeter or a cubic meter?

d. How many cubic centimeter are there in liter?

Solution: Cubic centimeter to Cubic Meter

To change cubic centimeter to cubic meter, we divide by 100.

Since: 1 m = 100 cm
1m x 1m x 1m = 100cm x 100cm x 100cm
1 m3 = 1 000 000 cm3
58 000 000 cm3 = m3
58 000 000 = 58 m3
1 000 000

Solution: Cubic centimeter to Liter

To change cubic centimeter to liter, we divide by 100.

1cm3 = 0.001 L

58 000 000 x 0.001 = 58 00

11
What’s More

1. 16 cm3 = mm3
2. 85000 dm3 = m3
3. 4 L= cL

5. 25000 mm3 = cm3

Independent Assessment 3

Direction: Read analyze and solve the problem.
