the Volume of a Cube and
Rectangular Prism
Introductory Message

This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our dear

learners, can continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities,
questions, directions, exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you
to understand each lesson.

Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you
step-by-step as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.

Pre-tests are provided to measure the prior knowledge on lessons in

each SLM. This will tell you if you need to proceed on completing this
module or if you need to ask your facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for
better understanding of the lesson. At the end of each module, you need to
answer the post-test to self-check your learning. Answer keys are provided
for each activity and test. We trust that you will be honest in using these.

In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teacher are
also provided to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on
how they can best help you on your home-based learning.

Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on
any part of this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the
exercises and tests. And read the instructions carefully before performing
each task.

If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in

answering the tasks in this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher
or facilitator.

Thank you.

What’s New

Benedict and Cassandra went to

their Uncle Benjie at Barangay Catmon.
Their uncle gave them rewards because
they both got high scores in their
examinations. Benedict received a dog. He
is going to use a cubical box to carry home
his new dog with 25 cm on its one side
while Cassandra received a doll house. She
will use a rectangular box with a length of
2 m, 1 m width, and 1.5 m height. Find the
volume of the box that Benedict and
Cassandra will use to carry home the
rewards that their uncle gave them.

Direction: Answer these questions on a separate sheet of paper.

1. Who are the characters in the story?

2. Where does their uncle live?

3. What did Benedict and Cassandra receive from their uncle?

3
4. Why did Uncle Benjie give them reward?

What is It

After reading the problem, let us find the volume of the box that
Benedict and Cassandra will use to carry their rewards home.

First, let us define volume.

Volume (V) is the number of cubic units needed to fill the shape. It is
the amount of space that is occupied by a space figure.

Volume is three-dimensional (3D), composed of the area of the base

(length x width) times the height. That is why it is always in cubic units
(cm3, m3, etc.)

A cube is an example of a solid figure that is three-dimensional. Since

all the faces of the cube are squares, then the length, width, and height are
all equal. The sides of the squares are called edges of the cube and is
symbolized by s.

The volume of a cube is equal to the cube of its measured side (s) or
side times side times side.

Formula: V=s 3
or V= s x s x s

Solve the problem.

This is the cubical box that Benedict will use for his dog.

25 cm

V= s3 V= s x s x s
V=(25 cm)3 V= 25 cm x 25 cm x 25 cm
V=15 625 cm3 V= 15 625 cm3

Answer: The volume of the cubical box that Benedict will use to carry his

4
dog home is 15 625cm3.
We know that for a rectangular prism, the base is always a rectangle.
Therefore the area is always the product of its length and width. To get the
volume, we just multiply the area by the height.

The volume of a rectangular prism can be found by multiplying its

three dimensions: the length ( l ), the width (w), and the height (h).

h
w

Formula:
V= l x w x h

Find the volume of the box that will be used by Cassandra to bring
her dog home.

1.5 m
1m
2m

V= l x w x h

V= 2 m x 1 m x 1.5 m

V= 3 m3

Answer: The volume of the rectangular box that Cassandra will use to bring
her doll house home is 3 m3.

n Estimating and Using the
Appropriate Units of Measures
2 for Volume

Estimation is part our everyday experience. It is a challenging task,

though being familiar in estimating is a valuable skill that will help hone the
learner’s critical thinking. It will also contribute in one’s ability to solve
problems quickly with precision and by this, it can help an individual reach
success no matter what profession he or she chooses.

What’s New

Direction: Read and study the problem. Then, answer the following
questions. Write your answers on a separate sheet of paper.

Jeffrey loves to play a rubik’s cube. One

day, he unfortunately lost his puzzle toy which
made him really sad. Mrs. Perla, his mother,
noticing the frowned face of her son,
immediately bought him a new one because
she knew that it’s his son’s favorite hobby. In
return, Jeffrey promised his mother that he
will treasure his new rubik’s cube so that he
won’t lose it again. Estimate the volume of the
rubik’s cube.

1. Who are the characters in the story?

2. What is Jeffrey’s favorite hobby?

3. What made Jeffrey sad?

4. What did Mrs.Perla do so that her child will not be sad anymore?

9
5. What was Jeffrey’s promise to his mother?

What is It

After reading the story, let us estimate the volume of the rubik’s cube.
Let us know first what is estimate and estimation.

Estimation is a process of finding a number that is close enough to

the right answer.

The number that we get through estimation is called estimate.

Here are the steps in estimating volumes.

1. Identify whether the object to be measured is solid or liquid to know the

unit of measurement to be used.

2. Use a unit cube as a reference.

3. Substitute the number of unit cubes covered by the side, length, width or
height of the given object.

4. Count the number of unit cubes in the formula for the volume of the
given object. The unit of the volume depends on the given unit of
measurement.

Units of Measurement for Volume

In measuring the volume of cubic and rectangular prisms, the units

used differ for solid and liquid objects.

The appropriate unit of measurement for volume of solid objects are

cubic centimeters (cm3) and cubic meters (m3). It depends on the size of the
solid object to be measured.

The appropriate unit of measurement for volume of liquid objects are

milliliters (ml) and liters (l). Again, it depends on the size of the liquid object
to be measured.

10
Let us now estimate the volume of the rubik’s cube of Jeffrey.

First, let us use which measures 1 cm3, to estimate the Rubik’s

cube.

To estimate the object, let us use the unit cube which measures one
cubic centimeter since the Rubik’s cube is a solid object.

As an example of cubic prism, we need to know the measurement of

the side of the Rubik’s cube. We can see that the side measures 3 unit
cubes.

Substitute the measurement of the side to the formula of the volume

of a cubic prism.

Volume= side x side x side

v=sxsxs

v = 3 cm x 3 cm x 3cm

v = 27 cm3

The estimated volume of Jeffrey’s Rubik’s cube is 27 cm3.

Example:
Estimate the volume of the juice that will fill up the whole box.

h=5

w= 2
l= 3

11
Let us use which measures 100 milliliters, to estimate the volume
of the juice inside the box.

Use the unit cube which measures one hundred milliliters to estimate
the object since the juice inside the box is liquid.

As an example of rectangular prism, we need to know the

measurement of the length, width, and height of the box. We can see that
the estimated measurement in terms of unit cubes are:

3 units cube for the length, 2 unit cubes for the width, and 5 unit
cubes for the height.

Substitute the measurement of the length, width, and height to the

formula of the volume of a rectangular prism.

Volume = l x w x h

V=3x2x5

V = 30 unit cubes

The volume resulted to 30 unit cubes.

We know that each unit cube measures 100 milliliters. So, to know
the volume of the box in milliliter, we must multiply it by 100 milliliters.

V= 30 unit cubes x 100 ml

V= 3000 ml

The estimated volume of the milk inside the box is 3000 milliliters.
