Topic: The Philippine Nursing Law: R.A. 9173

1. Read the Philippine Nursing Law of 2002: R.A. 9173, Article VI, Section 28, Scope
of Nursing Practice.

2. Write a reflective journal based on the following:

a. As a nursing student, how will you relate the article to the present situation
of the society?
As a student, I can relate the article to the present situation of society by
comparing how things happen as I observe it. In our society right now, the
field of nursing encompasses, not just the hospital setting, but also the
academe, and the communities.

b. Cite examples of present challenges concerning to the Scope of Nursing

Practice.
A few challenges that are faced in the Scope of Nursing Practice is that
nurses come into contact with individuals of diverse ages, ethnic origins, and
cultures. They strive relentlessly to meet the ill and vulnerable physical,
emotional, and spiritual needs. Nursing presents distinct challenges due to
nurses' high level of commitment to their profession. They get to know their
patients, are concerned about their requirements, and play a key role in their
rehabilitation. The most common challenge nurses face in regard to the
workload and commitment expected from them, is easy burn out. A lot of nurses
I know prefer to shift into the field of academe because of the burn out they feel
in hospital settings.

Another example of present challenges concerning the Scope of Nursing

Practice is under letter (e) of Section 28 in the Philippine Nursing Law of 2002:
R.A. 9173, Article VI. In here, it was emphasized that there must be
development of advance nursing practice. I think that this is a challenge when
certain law legislators and leaders of our country, do not recognize nursing as
an appropriate field of study that deserves investment and attention. I can cite
the 2013 Senatorial Forum as an example where Senator Cynthia Villar stated
naman kailangan silang maging ganong kagaling” I think that this is a
problematic statement coming from a law legislator, and it reflects how poorly
the nursing field is valued, and so is nursing research.

Despite the hardships of nursing, they make a difference in the lives of

countless others.
