Application of Edge Computing

Role of Edge computing in Smart grid

Smart grids, like other IoT areas, consist of a huge number of sensors and data sources that
continuously collect high-resolution data. Edge Computing tries to overcome this problem by
processing data near the embedded devices where the data is collected at the edge of the IoT
network.
Assets in the oil and gas business can be monitored remotely.

Remote asset monitoring is utilised in the oil and gas industry.

Failures in the oil and gas business have the potential to be disastrous. As a result, they must
keep a close eye on their belongings. On the other hand, oil and gas operations are generally
found in remote areas. By allowing real-time analytics to be performed considerably closer to
the asset, edge computing minimises the need for high-speed communication to a central
cloud.

In hospitals, it's used to keep track of patients.

In the field of healthcare, there are a number of cutting-edge solutions. Monitoring devices
(such as glucose monitors, health tools, and other sensors) are now either not connected or
require massive volumes of raw data to be stored in a third-party cloud. Healthcare personnel
are concerned about their safety as a result of this. An edge on the hospital site might process
data locally to safeguard data privacy. Edge also enables doctors to receive real-time
notifications of abnormal patient patterns or behaviours (through analytics/AI), as well as
create 360-degree patient dashboards for total visibility.
Edge Computing in Autonomous vehicles
One of the earliest applications for autonomous vehicles is platooning of truck convoys. A
truck convoy follows closely behind one another, reducing traffic congestion and saving fuel.
Because the trucks will be able to communicate with each other with ultra-low latency, edge
computing will be able to eliminate the need for drivers in all vehicles save the front one.

5G and virtualized radio networks (vRAN)

Operators are increasingly virtualizing parts of mobile networks (vRAN). This saves money
and gives them more flexibility. The new virtualised RAN hardware must perform complex
processing with minimal latency. In order to virtualize their RAN close to the cell tower,
operators will need edge servers.
Used in Predictive maintenance
Manufacturers want to be able to notice and analyse changes in their manufacturing lines
before they become a problem.
Edge computing improves data processing and storage by moving processing and storage
closer to the equipment. This allows IoT sensors to monitor machine health and do real-time
analytics with the shortest possible latency.
In cloud gaming, edge computing is used.
Latency is critical in cloud gaming, a new type of gaming that delivers a live broadcast of the
game to devices (the game is processed and hosted at data centres).

To reduce latency and provide a fully responsive and immersive gaming experience, cloud
gaming businesses are looking to position edge servers as close to gamers as feasible.

Content Delivery with Edge Computing.

Caching content at the edge, such as music, video streams, and web pages, can dramatically
improve content delivery. Latency can be considerably reduced. Content providers are
seeking to put CDNs closer to the edge in order to ensure network flexibility and adaptation
in response to user traffic demands.
In traffic management, edge computing is used.
Cities could benefit from edge computing to improve traffic control. Controlling the opening
and closing of new lanes, as well as future autonomous vehicle movements, are all examples.
Edge computing minimises bandwidth and latency costs by minimising the need to transport
large volumes of traffic data to a centralised cloud.

In Ambulance

Managing emergencies in a world that isn't entirely connected

According to Weisong Shi, a professor of computer science at Wayne State University and a
researcher in the field of edge computing and connected health, emergency medical
technicians can collaborate with doctors on how to stabilise the patient, while ER personnel
can prepare the room to handle their specific care needs.
"By enabling edge computing within emergency vehicles, EMTs can send critical data to the
hospital in real time, providing emergency department teams with the knowledge they need to
save lives," Shi explains.
