ABSTRACT
This study is entitled “Effects of the Language Barriers Affecting the Second
Language Acquisition of the Selected Grade 10 students of Tinawagan National
High School S/Y 2021-2022” under the advisory of our language education
research instructor, Dr. Wena P. Pagao. This study is conducted . This study
covered the selected Grade 10 students of Tinawagan National High School for
the school year 2021-2022 and was limited on determining the language barriers
that affects the acquisition of the second language and it’s effects on the
performance of students in their English class.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
This study focused on determining the perceived effects of the barriers that
affects the Second Language Acquisition of the Selected Grade 10 Students ofof
Tinawagan National High School S/Y 2021-2022. This study specifically aimed to
answer the following problems:
1. What are the language barriers that affects the student’s acquisition of the
second language?
2. What are the perceived effects of these language barriers in learning the
second language?
3. How does language barriers affect the performance of students in the
second language acquisition?

STATEMENT OF HYPOTHESIS
This study focused on the perceived effects of the barriers that affects the second
language acquisition of the selected Grade 10 students of Tinawagan National
High School S/Y 2021-2022. This research specifically aimed to:
1. Determine the language barriers that affects the student’s acquisition of the
second language,
2. Determine the perceived effects of the identified language barriers in learning
the second language of the students; and
3. Identify the common reasons of failures on the performance of students and
how these barriers affect the student’s SLA.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
This study aimed to give information regarding the effects of language barriers
that affects the acquisition of students of the second language. The beneficiaries
of this study are the following;
Students. This study will give the students the awareness of the possible factors
that affects their acquisition of the second language.
Teachers. This study will inform them the common problems of the failures of
students in the acquisition of the second language.
Parents. This study will give them awareness of how their children struggle in
learning the second language and in their performance in English class.
Administrators. This study will inform them the need for constant and adequate
inspection of the schools and for the purpose of evaluating their progress
effectively.
Community. This study will serve as a guide for them to know and understand
the effects of language barriers in the study of the students.
Future Researchers. The result of this study will give them advance knowledge
regarding the effects of language barrier in the second language acquisition and
will serve as their reference when they conduct further study regarding the topic.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION


This study covered the selected Grade 10 students of Tinawagan National High
School S/Y 2021-2022. This study is limited in determining the barriers that affects
the second language acquisition and also the perceived effects of these barriers
that affects the student’s acquisition of the second language. This research is also
limited on finding the common reasons of how these barriers affect the student’s
SLA.
DEFINITION OF TERMS

Language Barriers.: This are the difficulties in communication experienced by


people or groups speaking different languages, or even dialects in some cases,
based on the Merriam’s Dictionary. In this research, this will serve as the
independent variable which the study should be determined.

Acquisition: This is the act of learning or developing of a skill, according to


Merriam’s Dictionary. In this research, it is used as a substitute term for learning
the second language.

Effects. According to the Merriam’s Dictionary, this is the change that results
when something is done or happens. In this study, this will serve as the
dependent variable as it depends on the determined language barrier.

Second Language.

School. It is an establishment that offers specialized instructions or an


organization that provides instruction according to Merriam’s Dictionary. In this
study, we conducted this research on Tinawagan National High School.
CHAPTER II
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURES AND STUDIES

This part of the research is the related literatures that discussed the effects of the
language barriers that affects the second language acquisition of the selected
Grade 10 students of Tinawagan National High School S/Y 2021-2022.
RELATED STUDIES
This part of the research is the related studies that discussed the effects of the
language barriers that affects the second language acquisition of the selected
Grade 10 students of Tinawagan National High School S/Y 2021-2022.
SYNTHESIS OF THE STATE-OF-THE-ART
The researchers presented various related literatures and related studies
regarding the study. To have a clearer understanding of these literatures and
studies, the researchers made a synthesis.

GAP BRIDGE BY THE STUDY


This study aimed to determine the perceived effects of the barriers in
the acquisition of the second language of the students.
All studies has been a great help for the researchers to acquire ideas
regarding the possible effects of the language barriers in the learning of the
second language from the contents of the related literatures and related studies.
However, there were only few studies about the language barriers and there are
no specific study conducted in relation to the effects of the language barriers and
the common reasons of failure in the performance of students in their English
class.
CHAPTER III
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
RESEARCH DESIGN
This research is a case study as it aimed to determine the language barriers and
its effects on the learning of second language. It helps in the exploration of a
phenomenon within a particular context through the use of various data sources.
It will use a qualitative approach in interpreting the data.

RESEARCH ENVIRONMENT/LOCALE/SETTINGS OF THE STUDY


This study covered the selected Grade 10 students from Tinawagan National High
School at Tinawagan, Tigaon, Camarines Sur S/Y 2021-2022.

RESEARCH RESPONDENTS
This study is inclusive for the selected Grade 10 students of Tinawagan National
High School. The selected students are composed of 20 females and 20 males
with a total of 40 respondents.

RESEARCH INSTRUMENTS
The instrument we used in the study is a survey questionnaire prepared by the
researchers that is composed of ___ questions. The respondents were asked to
put a check on the designated box of their answers.

RESEARCH PROCEDURE
After acquiring all the formal permission that the researchers must acquire from
the locale where the data will be collected, the researchers will start gathering
the data needed in the study. After that, the researchers will interpret those data.
Then, the researchers will make the conclusions and possible solutions of the
problems of the study.
STATISTICAL TREATMENT OF DATA
This study focused on determining the language barriers and its effects on the
acquisition of the second language of the selected students of Tinawagan
National High School S/Y 2021-2022.
This research will use the frequency and percentage distribution to specify the
certain percentage of observation in each data and group data. It will also use the
weighted mean to compute the average.

Frequency and percentage distribution is used to specify the certain percentage
of observation in each data and group of data.

P= Percentage
F= Frequency
N= Number of respondents

2. Weighted mean
This is to compute the average of the data that has more weight than other data.

STATISTICAL TOOLS
In accordance with the objectives of the study and the statements of the
problems, the data that the researchers will gather will be subjected to
tabulation, statistical analysis and interpretation. The data that will be obtained
will be calculated and analyzed using the statistical tools and statistical ways of
treating the data to answer the problems of the study. In this research, the tools
that will be used are the weighted mean and the frequency and percentage
distribution.
