wiping out entire mankind.

It cannot be denied that the boon in many cases, has turned out to be the
bane. There are innumerable examples which prove that science, a blessing, has been turned into a
curse by man.

Sir Alfred Nobel experimented with dyanmite to clear huge mountains but modern man uses it to kill his
fellowmen. The destructive potential of atomic energy was witnessed in August 1945, when the United
States dropped atom on to the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Those who survived the
nuclear bombing suffered its aftermath. It is a highly disturbing fact that much of the national income of
a developing country is spent on the acquiring the latest weapons, bombs and missiles. Guns, revolvers,
tanks, fighter planes, explovies, nuclear bombs etc., were invented to devlop a strong security system so
as to protect the innocent masses, but their misuse is now crushing the humanity. Apart from nuclear
weapons, man has also startes stockpilling biological weapons. These weapons are lethal.

Biotechnology is a great boon for fighting diseases, but along with medicines, dangerous biological
weapons have also been developed. Germs and deliberately released into the air to spread diseases.
Antharax envelopes are used for spreading terrorism.

The negative effects of excessive use of fertilisers to increase yield, and of pesticides to ward of pests, are
now evident. Soil salinity has increased. Traces of DDT are found in plants. Humans consume the same
produce and ingest and toxic along, leading to various health complications.

Estabilishment and expansion of factories has resulted around all in pollution. Motor vechiles emit a lot
of poisonous substances into the atmosphere. This has led to the depletion of the ozone layer and has
resulted in global warming.

Television, a good source of entertainment, education and information, has its negative effects too.
There are many programmes which promote violence and vulgarity, and teenagers are more interested
in watching these programmes. Exposer and aggresiveness and violence at an early age may lead
youngsters to commit shocking crimes, and people of mature age learn and apply different methods of
commiting crimes from TV serials and movies.

The power of the Internet is also being abused through unhealthy pratices such as displaying
pornographic material or spreading malicious content to ruin someone's reputation. Lots of people
spend their time in chat rooms for obscene interactions. The interner is increasingly being is misused for
spamming, hacking, phising, defaming and other illegal activities.

Science has two faces-- good and bad. It depends on us which face of science we want to let emerge. If
we use the gifts of science in a positive manner with oppositive intention and in the positive direction, it
will benefit mankind, but if we misuse it, the same will prove to be pervasively harmful. To save the
world from destruction, we should use the gifts of science ethically and judiciously.
