The pressure of a rising global temperature and a stretch
on natural resources is increasing due to the number
of energy-inefficient homes in the UK. More sustainable
homes need to be built. This means finding ways to reduce
energy consumption, the amount of water we use and
reducing our wastage, all whilst allowing space for the local
wildlife and nature to thrive.
150 litres
We each consume around 150 litres of water every day and, while
around half of household water is reusable, only 17% is currently
recycled.

4 Why is transporting building
materials harmful to the
environment?

Houses account for around 30% of the UK’s total energy use. This
includes lighting, heating and cooling. Many homes are hundreds of
years old and therefore not well insulated, meaning a significant loss
of warmth even when the heating is on.

5 How is the government planning
to reduce energy consumption in
the near future?
27%
27% of the UK’s carbon emissions come from housing, either from
the buildings themselves or the transportation it takes to move the
materials. So, what can we do to reduce the impact this has on
our planet?

300,000
The British government has committed to building at least 300,000
homes a year over the next five years, with the aim of improving
resource efficiency by 25% per home. Although this will cost significantly
more, it will surely be worth it, given the potential environmental impact
of not doing so.
