BACKGROUND OF STUDY
INTRODUCTION :

Environmental around the house is very important to get a good selection for thermal comfort

for the house. Why is thermal comfort important? By managing thermal comfort, you are

likely to improve morale and productivity as well as improving health and safety. People

working uncomfortably hot and cold environments are more likely to behave unsafely

because their ability to make decisions and perform manual tasks deteriorates.

This study wants to analyse the building of materials used, energy and water consumption of

the house. Buildings are using up a large proportion of the available resources worldwide.

The construction industry uses a variety of building materials for different aspects of a

building materials for different aspects of a home builds. Most common materials used are

concrete, steel, wood, masonry, and stone. Each has different strength, weight, and durability,

which makes it right for various uses. There are national standards and testing methods that

govern the use of building materials in the construction industry, so that they can be relied on

for providing structural integrity.

Every house has the household equipment that use energy and water consumption. Energy is

so important in our daily lives because it is a basic human need. The energy in house it is not

only used to switch on the lights in your house, but it is important for operating all

appliances, entertainment, lighting and of course all technology such as allow you to

conveniently cook, clean, etc.

4
Water consumption is used for indoor and outdoor household purposes, such as all the

things you do at home. For example, drinking, preparing food, bathing clothes and dishes,

brushing your teeth, watering garden, and even washing the dog. Water consumption use

refers to the amount that is “self-supplied”, or water directly withdrawn to users, such as form

a well at a person’ s home. Energy and water consumption are intricately connected it is

because there is water consumption equipment use energy to operate it such as water cooler,

water filter, water dispenser, etc.

OBJECTIVE :

1) Analyse and collect the general building information for 5 different houses of the members

in group.

2) Comparison, summarise, provide analytical evaluation the result in appropriate form and

suggest for improvement in house.

DATA COLLECTION

UZAIR’S HOUSE :

6
DESIGN :

The design of this house is a terraced house. Terrace house is a house in a row of houses that

shares a wall with the houses next to it. The design of my terrace house is enough to

accommodate 2 cars, 2 motorcycle and occupy a total of 4 people. For the wall of this house

use a cement plastering. The materials use for this type of this concrete wall finishes is the

mixture of cement, water, and sand mortar where the wall is plastered, sand-faced finish and

smooth finish and it is same with floor. It is a very simple and cost-effective walls. All the

wall windows in this house are using a textured glass type of windows. For the roof of this

house wear an ardex type of roof. Lastly, for this house fence has been installed with steel

type of fence.

Orientation is the positioning of a building in relation to seasonal variations in the sun’s path

as well as prevailing wind patterns. Good orientation can increase the energy of your home,

making it more comfortable to live in and cheaper to run. It is important to understand how

the location and orientation of the house will affect your home’s energy profile. Houses

oriented longitudinally require less energy for both heating and cooling. Resulting in lower

utility bills and increased comfort. This house has a good orientation to the path of the sun

and prevailing the wind, it significantly improves the comfort and reduce heating and cooling

needs in the house. In the bedroom 3, the orientation is not very good because there is no

flow of sunlight and fresh air to get in because there are no windows at all in that room. It is

very hot in that room, so this room is using 1 ceiling fan to give the thermal comfort to the

people in the room. However, it still hot.

7
ENERGY AND WATER CONSUMPTION :

Electricity energy used in this house is low because of the design and orientation in this

house is good and the mostly using the 5-star rating energy appliances of household

equipment that really help to reducing the energy consumption daily. The electricity bills for

this house in every month, will not exceed than RM60 to pay. What is 5-star rating energy

appliances of household equipment? In Malaysia, we have 5-star rating energy appliances

that are certified by Energy Commission of Malaysia. It is refrigerator, air-conditioner, fan,

etc. In this house, there is about 6 fan and 1 air-conditioner that using 5-star rating energy

appliances for the thermal comfort.

Every household will consume water in their daily life. Water is used for indoor and outdoor

household purposes and all the things they do at home such as drinking, preparing food,

bathing, washing clothes and dishes, brushing their teeth, watering the garden, etc. Water

consumption in this house is very low. It can be said that because, the water bills in this house

were below RM20 every month. The use of the water is low because there are only 4 people

in the house. Energy and the water consumption has interrelated each other, for example,

water heater, water cooler, etc.

RIDZUAN’S HOUSE:

9
DESIGN:

This home design is more of a combination of brick and wood. This design was made by my

father because this is just a village house and was built by my father himself with help from

family members. Previously, the mini kitchen was a real kitchen for my house before a new

one was built. When a new kitchen was built, so the old kitchen was built one room for my

brother and his family. So it can make things easier for my brother to take care of his son’s

needs such as making milk, cooking food and so on. Before this, my house was entirely built

using wood except for the kitchen art which was built using bricks. This is because people

used to think so the fire will not spread to other places.

The orientation of this house can be considered comfortable due to the adequate reception of

sunlight. The house is turned around during sunrise making the situation in the morning quite

comfortable. The house is surrounded by various green plants such as banana trees and so on.

this is because the position of this house is more to an area that has a variety of trees. This

can reduce sunlight to the house. This can make the house less hot and more comfortable.

10
ENERGY AND WATER CONSUMPTION:

The electricity used in this house is low because the design and orientation of this house is

good. Electrical appliances used in this house are very helpful to reduce daily energy

consumption such as fans, ceiling fans and so on. The electricity bill of this house in each

month in the range of RM30-RM80 to be paid. In this house, there are about 9 fans and 3

ceiling fans.

Every household will take water in their daily life. Water is used for indoor and outdoor

household needs and all the things they do at home such as drinking, preparing food, bathing,

washing clothes and dishes, brushing teeth, watering plants and so on. The use of water in

this house is considered simple. It can be said so because, the water bill in this house is in the

range of RM50-RM100 a month. The use of water is moderate because it is also used for

work activities such as washing materials and for mixing cement. Energy and water

consumption are interconnected with each other, for example the use of water power

generators to speed up water.
