Tutorial 4: Dominant Design and Disruptive Innovations

As part of the innovation frameworks, we discussed essential concepts including Dominant Design and
disruptive innovations in IT industry. In this tutorial, we will reinforce our learning through a group
discussion on the dominant design on Virtual/Augmented Reality (VR/AR) strategy across different
platforms.

Examine the following common VR devices:

• Oculus rift: https://www.oculus.com/?locale=en_US
• HTC Vive: https://www.vive.com/au/product/vive-cosmos-elite/overview/
• Google Cardboard: https://arvr.google.com/cardboard/
• MS Hololens 2: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/hololens

As a group, discuss the following points:

1. Augmented Reality (AR) products/services are pervasive and embedded in our daily life, can
you suggest a few applications of AR? Do you think if a dominant design has emerged for AR
products/services?

2. Compared with AR applications, the diffusion of VR products and services are slow. Do you
think VR products/services has a dominant design yet? You may think about this in the context
of concepts learned in the class including ‘architecture’, ‘standards’, ‘network effect’ and ‘self-
reinforcing cycle’.

3. Do you think if AR and VR products/services are disruptive innovation? Are they disrupting
the same industry? Microsoft is targeting dominant design of what’s beyond VR and AR: Mixed
Reality. With HoloLens, could it become a disruptive innovation? Does Hololens have the
potential to become a dominant design in VR/AR/Mixed Reality (MR)?

4. Note that all major VR/AR/MR companies have invested on an OS. Google’s Android for
Daydream; Oculus GO also has its own OS (modified Android); Similarly, Microsoft MR has
Windows holographic OS. Does a VR/AR/MR company need to have an OS to become a
disruptive innovation?

Your tutor will oversee the group discussions and challenge some of the points being discussed to help
groups to think, analyse and apply relevant concepts critically. This will help you to develop critical
thinking skills and rational for carrying on the assignment task. Students will also learn from the group
discussions and presentations (different perspectives).

Each group will be allocated specific time to present a summary of the group’s findings. One group
member to present the findings. Your tutor will coordinate the presentation and discussion.
