1. Provide a reason of using ammonium hydroxide and ammonium chloride in precipitation


of Group IV cations.

ANSWER
The reason why ammonium hydroxide and ammonium chloride are needed in
the precipitation of Group 4 Cations is so that the group 4 cations will precipitate and those
compounds remaining in the supernatant such as carbonates will remain soluble together with
the group 5 cations.

2. Complete the following chemical equation below. Provide the reagent that will separate
each pair of compounds in a single step. (Note: place your answer of the equation in a
