I. Introductory Concept

Internet is essential educational tool for the learners as it makes

studying stuff easier for them, and re-learning the material taught in
the school. It is used by people according to their needs and desires.
As a learner you are expected to navigate a web browser and apply the
knowledge in using search engine in everyday lives.

USING A WEB BROWSER

The Web, also known as the World Wide Web (WWW),
is basically a series of endless pages of Internet information.

URL
Also known as a web address and it is a unique address of every
website or webpages. Other term used is URL (short for Uniform Resource
Locator). By entering a URL in the address bar of the browser and pressing
Enter on your keyboard, the browser loads the page linked with that URL.

Links
Whenever you see a blue underlined word or phrase on a webpage, it
is what we called as hyperlink, or link in short.

Bookmarks
Often known as favorites, bookmarks are a perfect way to save and
organize popular websites so you can access them over and over. To
bookmark the current webpage, simply locate and select the Star icon.

Search Engines
A search engine is a web-based tool that enables users to locate
information on the World Wide Web. Popular examples of search engines are
Google, Yahoo!, and MSN Search.

Internet Search Techniques

1. Using Key words
- List keywords that define your topic – these will become your search
terms.
- Be as specific as possible e.g. Rose rather than Flower
2. Use quotation marks for exact phrases
e. g “Wind Power” will result in web pages where that phrase appears.
There will be fewer sites than if we searched for wind and power
separately.
3. Boolean searching: Use + and – to narrow your search
“wind power” +Australia “wind power” AND Australia
Use + or AND to include all words.
“wind power” + Australia –jobs “wind power” AND Australia NOT
jobs
Use – or NOT to exclude words you do not want.
IMPORTANT – do not use a space between the + and – signs and
the search term
e.g. –jobs not - jobs
4. Advanced search option in Google
Click the Advanced Search button at bottom of Google start or results
page to refine your search by date, country, amount, language, or other
criteria.
5. Browser History
Handy to find webpages you may have used previously or dismissed.
6. Searching the webpage – use Ctrl+F
Once you’ve found a webpage that looks useful, use the Search
window on the webpage, or press CTRL+F to open the FIND box.
- Type the word or phrase you are looking for and then press
ENTER.
- Click the Highlight All Matches button to show or hide all
matches on the page.
7. Set a time limit then change tactics/ use different search engines
www.google.com, www.yahoo.com; www.ask.com; www.bing.com
8. Evaluating websites
To locate and get information coming from the internet, we should
always consider the CRAAP which stands for Currency, Relevance,
Authority, Accuracy, and Purpose. With this, you can ask yourself when

deciding whether or not a source is reliable and credible enough to use in
your academic research paper.

Computer Maintenance
To keep your computer running smoothly, it's important to keep the
files and folders organized.
Unorganized directories are making it harder to find the files you
need. In addition, Unwanted files will gradually fill up your hard drive,
making it slower and harder to use your computer.

Here are some things you can do to delete unwanted files and improve
the performance of your computer:

 Delete Files
If you have any unwanted files, you can delete them manually. To do
this, simply drag them into the Recycle Bin, and then empty the Recycle
Bin.
 Disk Defragmenter
Windows includes a Disk Defragmenter program in the Control Panel.
It scans the files on your hard drive and then rearranges them so that it can

Defragmenter can help to speed it up.
