DAY 3
MINI-LESSON

Good day, learner! Today we will

discuss about criteria for
appropriate searching or URL of
site.

Seven Criteria for Appropriate Searching

(Gathering What You Need, Discarding What You Don't)

1. Vary Your Search Engine

Search engines sort through about 625 million active websites
to provide you with content. You may favor one, but don't let habit
restrict you. No search engine is perfect, and they all have different
blind spots.

2. Use Specific Keywords

Keywords are the terms that you use to find content on the
internet. Making your keywords as specific as possible will help your
search engine to track down the information that you want.

3. Simplify Your Search Terms

Some engines include stop words in their searches. These
are frequently used words such as prepositions (in, of, on),
conjunctions (and, but) and articles (a, the), which mean that you'll
end up with more pages in your search results than you need.

8
4. Use Quotation Marks
Use “ ” marks around phrases to make sure they are searched
exactly as is otherwise most search engines will look for each word
separately.

5. Remove Unhelpful Words

Inserting a hyphen/small dash/minus sign immediately before
a word excludes it from a search.

6. Refine Your Search Using Operators

Other characters or terms, known as operators, allow you to

narrow down your internet search in more targeted ways.

7. Avoid Search Pitfalls

When searching online, it's important to bear in mind that

many companies now have staffs who are dedicated to improving
their visibility online. They constantly tweak the wording of their
websites to match the most used keywords – a process known as
Search Engine Optimization (SEO).

What is an URL?

Every time you click a link on a website or type a web address into
your browser, it’s an URL. URL stands for Uniform Resource Locator.
Think of it like a street address, with each portion of the URL as different
parts of the address, and each giving you different information.

These elements make up an URL, although not all URLs will have
all five parts.
9
II. GUIDED PRACTICE

Directions: Write T if the statement is true and F if the statement is

false.

___1. The more words in your search, the better your results will be.

___2. One search engine is enough if you do research.

___3. Other characters or terms known as operators does not allow

you to narrow down your internet search in more targeted
ways.

___4. It is best to eliminate stop words from your internet searches.

___5. Use “ ” marks around phrases to make sure they are searched
exactly as is otherwise most search engines will look for each
word separately.

III. INDEPENDENT PRACTICE ACTIVITY

Directions: Search for “Filipino spaghetti recipe” and select at least

three sites and paste here the URL. Label the elements of the URL.

10
