FOREWORD

A web search engine or Internet search engine is

a software system that is designed to carry out web
search (Internet search), which means to search the World Wide
Web in a systematic way for particular information specified in a
textual web search query. The search results are generally
presented in a line of results, often referred to as search engine
results pages (SERPs). The information may be a mix of links
to web pages, images, videos, infographics, articles, research
papers, and other types of files. Some search engines also mine
data available in databases or open directories. Unlike web
directories, which are maintained only by human editors, search
engines also maintain real-time information by running
an algorithm on a web crawler. Internet content that is not capable
of being searched by a web search engine is generally described as
the deep web.

This (SLM) Self Learning Module is a learning resource based

on the Most Essential Learning Competencies prepared by the
Department of Education. Its main objective is to help the Filipino
high school learners develop their skills in using varied search
engine and to be globally competitive on the use of multimedia.

OBJECTIVES

a. identify the name of the logo of the given search engine;

b. distinguish the use of each search engine;
c. infer the purpose of the search engine;
d. use a search engine to conduct a guided search on a given topic.

LEARNING COMPETENCY:
Use a search engine to conduct a guided search on a given topic
(EN7SS-II-c-1.5.3)

WHAT HAPPENED?

Search Engine Result Page (SERP)

When a researcher types a keyword query then the
search engine displays a page called Search Engine Result
Page (SERP). SERP is a listing of results in response to a
keyword query by a researcher. These results are of two types:
first type is organic results and the second is sponsored
results. Organic results are retrieved by the search engine’s
algorithm and sponsored are advertisements. The results are
ranked on a search engine according to the queries. For
organic results, each result has a title of post or article,
permalink, and short summary (description) on the SERP
while in sponsored results, the advertiser makes decision and
chooses what to display on SERP.

How Search Engine Works?

Internet search engines are special sites that are designed

to help the people to find information stored on other websites.
Crawling, indexing, and ranking are the steps of search engine.

Crawling

Each search engine on the internet has its own spiders

that go to different websites to discover the new URLs and
different contents. Search engines have special and advance
program for the crawling process. Web crawlers are the
computer programs that scan and reading the websites. They
also called spiders, bots, and automatic indexers.

When a new web page is found, the spider reads the content and images. First Spiders go
to the website and look at the robots.txt file (used for crawling restrictions by the webmasters). After
http://www.tipsandarticles.com/what-is-search-engine-how-it-
crawling the URLs, they generate a copy of each page of the website and then pass it to the index.

Indexing

Index is the sets of data base that contain millions of pages

on search. Index is the big list of web pages and words. Indexed
data is stored in encoded format to save the space. When a user
types a query on search bar of a search engine, the search engine
goes to its index library to fetch the required information for
display. The search engine finds millions of information in library
on SERP (Search Engine Result Page). Regularly updated websites
with unique and genuine contents are given better position on
SERP.

Ranking

The last step of search engine is ranking. Each search engine

has its own ranking algorithm to rank the webpages of a website
based on keywords. Search engines regularly update their
algorithms.
