DESCRIPTION OF PROBLEM
ENVIRONMENT
• The irrigation of agricultural crops accounts for
most (80 percent) of the Nation's water
consumption.
• Availability of regular and appropriate water
supply will increase the income of farmers
imparting a sense of security and stability in
agriculture.
• So it's essential to deliver correct amount of
water for crops
• VISION
• Our vision is to come up with a effective and
cost efficient method for watering crops
automatically.
• Water use can easily be reduced by irrigating only
when plants need water.
• Enable Farmers to monitor and control the
irrigation of their field form anywhere and anytime.
• ISSUE
• We don't have a proper and effective technique to
deliver water to crops.
• METHOD
• We are going to design a small prototype model
using the Sensor technology which detects the
moisture content in soil and supply appropriate
water to crops.
• Who?
• Our product will we useful to farmers, gardeners and
landlords.
• What?
• If there is no solution for this problem then a huge
amount of time and water would be wasted while
watering crops. So it's necessary to find a solution to
this problem.
• When?
• While watering crops there arose a problem with
delivering correct amount of water to the crops and also
requires some method which would reduce time
consumption and irrigates crops in a comfortable way
• Where?
• This issue occurs in farms ,home gardening areas
where overwatering and underwatering occurs.
• Why?
• To detect the moisture content in the plants and
water plants accordingly to prevent crops form
getting damage due to overwatering or
underwatering issues and our solution also prevents
water loss without requiring manual involvement of
persons.
Ideal
• Proper designing minimizes time consumption.
• People expect that the design should be cost efficient
• The automatic irrigation technique results in reduced labour.
Reality
• The current state irrigation technique requires high technical knowledge for
operating
• But the product which is available in the current market is not affordable
Consequences
• The current irrigation system has the negative impact in the danger of water
logging and Stalinization of soils and waters, rise in groundwater table, spread of
water borne diseases, pollution of waters and many others. So it's essential to
improve the current state irrigation system

Motivator
• By interacting with Mr. D. John we came to know his problems
which is stated below.
• "I'm a landlord. l live far away from my field and I have
to travel a long distance to water and take care of my crops or
else I have to appoint workers to take care of my field.
This causes more financial issues. So I think it would better
to take care of my crops from where I am living. Could you
suggest me a solution from this problem?"

DEVELOPMENT OF LOW
COST PROTOTYPE
• The proposed system has used
various components to do the task
appropriately.
• The sensors and other components
are placed in such way so that they
can detect the moisture and
humidity in the soil and the motor
automatically water the plants
when the plant need water

and power supply and Humidity Sensor
CIRCUIT DIAGRAM
SOFTWARE USED
• Arduino IDE
• BLYNK mobile application
Arduino IDE:
• The Arduino Integrated Development Environment is a cross-platform
application that is written in functions from C and C++.
• It is used to write and upload programs to Arduino compatible boards,
interacting with inputs and outputs such as sensors, motors, and lights.
• BLYNK :
• Blynk is a new platform that allows us to quickly build interfaces for
controlling and monitoring your hardware projects from your iOS and
Android device.
• We can control hardware remotely on our android device , it can display
sensor data, it can store data, visualize it and do many other cool things
PROTOTYPE
DESIGN
• In our prototype we
kept a sensor in the
soil which is used to
monitor the moisture
content in soil and
thereby helps in
irrigation and also it
reminds us in our
mobile phone to feed
the plants.

Wi-Fi NodeMCU ESP8266 Development Board It is used because of their low cost, availability of
open source developer tool, and because of its easy
programming. Data collected from various sensors is
sent to the local PC through Arduino IDE software.

Soil moisture sensor It is used to detect the moisture content in the soil

DHT11 Temperature and Humidity sensor The humidity sensor senses, measures and reports
both moisture and air temperature. Relative
humidity becomes an important factor when
looking for comfortable growth of plants

Relay The relay module is an electrically operated switch

that allows you to turn on or off a circuit using
voltage or current much higher than a
microcontroller could handle.

Water pump They are exclusively used for displacing water from
the tank to the plants

Power supply It gives power to every electrical equipment

present in the prototype.
BLOCK DIAGRAM OF THE PROTOTYPE
Main task: This prototype mainly concentrates on sending notification(“plants
need to be watered’) to the android device of the farmer and the motor can be
controlled form the android device and the crops can be irrigated automatically
without manual labour
Step 1: the connections should be made
Step 2: a token code from BLYNK application is generated and this code is
included in the source code to connect NodeMCU ESP8266 and android device
Step 3: at last the source coding is uploaded to the microcontroller NodeMCU
ESP8266 through Arduino IDE software.
Step 4: now the soil moisture sensor should be inserted to the soil . It senses the
moisture content in the soil and sends notification to the android device through
the BLYNK application. If no moisture is detected the device notify as” the plant
has not watered yet”. If moisture is detected “ the plants does no need water”
Step 5: after receiving the notification the motor turns on automatically and it can
be monitored and controlled from our device anytime anywhere
