Assignment 2: SPSS

Instructions: Provide your answers under each question (except #3) and upload document
to D2L assignment folder. Again, make sure your answer is under each of the questions.
Your paper will not be graded if the question and the answer are not written together.
Note: You are uploading two files to D2L. An SPSS .sav file for (#3) and a word document
with detailed answers (one or two sentences will not earn you full points) to the remaining
questions
Follow all instructions completely.

1. Why is the “Label” option in the Variable View useful? Use your textbook to answer this
question and reference using APA format. (worth 2 points)
2. Why would you use the Save As option on the File menu and when would you use it
rather than the Save option on the File menu? Also, in your own words, clearly outline
the steps in saving your SPSS data/work. Use your textbook to answer this question.
(worth 2 points)
3. Do task #3 under "Smart Alex's tasks" (p. 132). Enter the data into SPSS and save the file
as Method of Teaching.sav. Upload saved file to D2L assignment folder (worth 3 points)
4. Download the dataset "Big Hairy Spider". Calculate the mean, median, and mode for the
variables "picture of spider" and "real spider". Submit only your result from the output
viewer to me. Hint: use “Export” from the file menu and paste under this question. (worth
4 points)
5. Go to p. 132 and do task #6. Create the data file, however I want you to change a few of
the numbers. Look at the first column animal liking. Make each number in that column
one higher - so 69 will become 70, 25 will become 26 and so on.
6. After you have created the datafile, calculate the mean, median, mode and SD for two of
your variables. After you have set up the dataset you will know which two. Submit only
your result from the output viewer to me. Hint: use “Export” from the file menu and paste
under this question. (worth 4 points)
