DETERMINATION OF SCUFF RESISTANCE OF VARIOUS

TOPIC
PACKAGING MATERIALS
SUB-TOPIC

At the end of the experiment, students should be able to:
LEARNING
1. Determine the scuff resistance of packaging material

1. Varnish-coated printed label
2. Non-coated printed label

DRAWING AND
DATA
The amount of abrasion damage to a printed substrate is dependent
on shipping conditions, possibly temperature and humidity, time, and
many other variables. This test provides a way of comparing abrasion
resistance of printed materials under laboratory conditions. This
practice covers a procedure for determining the abrasion resistance of
INSTRUCTION printed materials using the Sutherland Rub Tester, or its equivalent,
and it is applicable to labels, folding cartons, corrugated boxes,
inserts, circulars, and other packaging materials having applied
graphics on a flat substrate. This test will be carried out according to
ASTM D 5264.

PROCEDURE
STEP KEY POINT
1. Cut the printed labels into a size of 76
mm x 152 mm.
1. Preparation of test specimens
2. The specimen should preferably be a
flat sample with no scoring, ridges, or
other surface irregularities.
3. In testing multiple samples, it is
important that each specimen has
comparable ink coverage and ink
density.
1. Place a piece of the specimen on the
base of the test with the face of the
printed surface in an upward direction.
2. Make sure that the surface of two
printed materials are kept on a same
plane, placing the printed side parallel.
3. After that, put a weight of 2 psi above
the sample.
4. Start the test by setting the number of
B. Scuff resistance test methods
strokes maximum up to 100 cycles.
5. The standard speed to perform the
scuffing test is 60 rpm which occurs at a
constant pressure.
6. After the completion of a number of
strokes, remove the specimen and the
test specimen is examined for rubbing
or for any type of ink transfer.

RESULT:

1. Carefully observe the tested specimens for scratches, degree of ink degradation,
degree of ink transferred and damage on the labels.
2. Record the observations.
3. Compare the differences of scuff resistance between varnish-coated label and non-
coated label after subjected to the testing.

QUESTION/DISCUSSION:

1. Discuss how abrasion can occur and affect the package labels.
2. Propose methods to improve the scuff resistance of the package labels.
