CODE & COURSE SHEET NO JS04
Packaging Materials & Testing 3
LECTURER RAZIF RASHID DURATION 6 Hours

TOPIC DETERMINATION OF PACKAGE INTEGRITY & SEAL STRENGTH

SUB-TOPIC

TOPIC At the end of the experiment, students should be able to:

LEARNING 1. Determine the package integrity (in term of compressive resistance)
OUTCOME of packaging material

Materials:
1. Single wall corrugated box with content
TOOLS / 2. Double Wall corrugated box with content
EQUIPMENTS /
MATERIALS Apparatus:
1. Compressive testing equipment

DRAWING AND
DATA
This testing covers compression tests on shipping containers (for
example, boxes and drums) or components, or both. Shipping
containers may be tested with or without contents. The procedure
may be used for measuring the ability of the container to resist
INSTRUCTION
external compressive loads applied to its faces, to diagonally opposite
edges, or to corners. This testing will be carried out according to
ASTM D642.

PROCEDURE
STEP KEY POINT
1. Pre-condition package for a minimum of
24 hours at 22° ± 1°C and 50% ± 5%
1. Preparation of test specimens
RH prior to testing.
2. The package (box) should be tested in
its normal shipping orientation.
1. Carefully center the specimen on the
bottom compression platen
2. Slowly bring the top platen into contact
with the specimen
3. Apply the desired pre-load (22.7 kg for
single wall corrugated box and 45.4 kg
B. Compressive resistance test for double wall corrugated box).
methods 4. Make sure the system is set to
specimen deformation
5. Begin to apply load at the constant rate
indicated in the specification
6. Continue test until failure or specified
load
7. Repeat this procedure (for multiple test).

RESULT:

1. Observe and record any permanent buckling or creasing of the box during the
compression testing.
2. Report any damage on the content of the box after the package is subjected to
compression testing.
3. Record the Load vs Displacement graph of each specimen and identify the peak load.

QUESTION/DISCUSSION:

1. Compare the compression resistance of single wall corrugated box and double wall
corrugated box.
2. Discuss the difference in compression resistance in these 2 types of packages (as
mentioned in Question 1).
3. List the factors that could potentially affecting the test results.
