Introduction
• Migration to IEC 61850 based
Substation Automation Systems will
take some time
• The standard allows smooth migration
strategies for existing installations
with electromechanical protection
devices
• Integration of legacy IEDs is supported
as well
• Communications only based solutions
are the future

Migration strategy
• “Greenfields” happen but are (very) rare
• Need to define the general migration from present situation
to the future
• Several strategies – need to define the applicable one
• Per function, for example: change protection first
• Per electro-technical entity, for example: bay or voltage
level
• Key criteria: aging device, qualified device, outage
minimization, etc.
• “Proxy concept”
• Gateway from past protocol to IEC 61850
• IED, RTU or even GUI
• Network vision
• Telecontrol: protocol, configuration exchanges
• Asset management
• Distributed automation

IEC 61850 and Legacy Devices

• For communication purposes (beyond

a logical node) the concept of a logical
device has been introduced.
• A logical device is mainly a
composition of logical nodes and
additional services
• The grouping of logical nodes in
logical devices is based on common
features of these logical nodes.

IEC 61850 and Legacy Devices

• Logical devices enable the building

of gateways (proxies) in such a way
that logical devices are – from a
functional point of view –
transparent.

• Each logical device can be identified

independently of its location (in a
separate device connected to the
network or in a proxy device).

IEC 61850 and Legacy Devices

• A Proxy Server is a server that sits

between a client application and a
real server.

• A gateway is a network
interconnection device that
supports the full stack of the
relevant protocol which it can
convert to a non 7 layer protocol for
asynchronous transmission over
wide area networks

IEC 61850 and Legacy Devices

• Logical devices provide information about

the physical devices they use as host
(nameplate and health)
• They also provide information about
external devices that are controlled by the
logical device (external equipment nameplate
and health).
• Logical devices reside in physical devices

• Only those aspects of physical devices

that are defined as visible to the network
are of interest in IEC 61850.

IEC 61850 and Legacy Devices

• The logical node zero (LLN0)

represents common data of the
logical device
• The logical node physical device
(LPHD) represents common data of
the physical device hosting the
logical device.
• LLN0 and LPHD are defined in any
logical device.

Proxy Servers
• To represent the information about the
proxy/gateway itself, the logical device
LD0 shall be implemented in each device
that acts as a proxy or gateway.

• The logical nodes LLN0 and LPHD of LD0

shall represent information about the
proxy or gateway device.

• If a physical device does not provide

logical devices that mirror logical devices
of other physical devices, then this
physical device does not need to provide
a LD0.
