For questions 1-8 read the text below and decide which answer (A, B, C or D) best fits each gap.
We all want to make a good impression, but this takes some effort. The key to doing this is to be
memorable, but in a positive way. For example, you could dress like a clown and get a lot of
attention. Or you might (1) ………… a big row with someone in a social meeting. Or maybe, you can
reveal (2) ………… information about someone. All of them are memorable, but not in a good way.
So, how can you be memorable in a positive way?
Parties and social gatherings often involve making (3) ………… talk that is supposed to (4) …………
people at ease. They are introduced to one another, and they are usually worried about asking
(5) ………… questions that don’t make anyone uncomfortable. So, the conversation begins with
predictable questions and comments like “What do you do for a living?”, “I’m a doctor”, “So, you’ve
always got a (6) ………… of work to do during the week”. Imagine, however, if you answer the
question with more uncommon answers. For instance, someone asks “What do you do for a
living” and the person answers “I bring the past to life to help us navigate the future. I’m a History
professor”. However, these unusual ways of answering simple questions should be accompanied
by eye contact and gestures. Nobody likes a person who is (7) ………… on their phones while they
are talking to you.
So, think about more uncommon ways you can answer simple questions such as “Where are you
from?” or “What do you do for a living?”. Doing so will result (8) ………… more interesting and
enjoyable conversations.
