Definition

A persuasive essay is one in which you try to convince someone to take a particular
issue or adopt a point of view. Persuasive writing may be designed to convince the
reader to take your position on a particular issue or may be designed to convince the
reader to take a certain action. Effective persuasive writing requires a writer to state
clearly an opinion and to supply reasons, specific examples, research, and ideas in
order to sway the reader one way or the other.

Writing Strategy

a. Clearly state your idea.


b. Give reasons to support your claim.
c. Use pieces of evidence to support your claim such as facts, statistics, quotes…
d. Use transitional words/phrases.

Plan the structure

I. Introduction:

 Use an interesting grabber to get the reader’s attention.


 Give a bit of background information about the situation you’re
discussing.
 Finish with a thesis statement that states the main idea of the essay
and clearly expresses your opinion.
II. Body paragraphs
 Start each body paragraph with a topic sentence.
 Each paragraph should give a different reason for the reader to agree
with your position.
 Provide evidence to support your opinion. Facts, statistics, examples,
anecdotes, interview quotations, or expert opinions.

III. Conclusion
 Restate your thesis statement in a new way.
 Make a call to action.
Example:

A Step into a Healthy Life


“Sports is a metaphor of overcoming obstacles and achieving against great odds.”
This quote proclaims that sports is a semblance obstacles of one’s reality in which a
person is expected to face and surmount adversities and thrive despite the hindrances
that might impede or hinder one’s progress. In other words, this quote highlights the
significance of sports which is essential for a healthy lifestyle. People should embrace
