The document describes constructing and studying a Schmitt trigger using an IC 555 timer. The Schmitt trigger converts a sine wave input into a square wave output by using two threshold voltages. It retains its output value when the input is between the thresholds, acting as a memory element. The circuit was built according to the diagram using IC 555 timer, resistors, and a capacitor. The triggering voltage was measured for different resistor combinations of R1 and R2.

AIM: To construct and study the Schmitt trigger using IC 555 timer. APPARATUS REQUIRED: IC 555 timer , Resistance(100k Ω ) ,capacitance (10 μF) , power suppy. PRINCIPLE: This is used in producing square waves from the sine wave input. When the input voltage fed into IC 555 more than threshold, the triggering action begins the output is obtained. Adjust the input voltage from 0V till to get the square wave output. At this instant, the input voltage is measured and noted as the trigger voltage. The trigger voltage can be varied by varying R1 and R2. PROCEDURE: The Schmitt trigger is designated as shown in the figure. Pins 4 and 8 are calculated to the power supply(+Vcc). The pins 2 and 6 are shorted and input is given to this point through capacitor. The common point is applied with an external bias voltage Vcc/2 with the help of voltage divider circuit formed by resistors R1 and R2. The output retains its value when the input is between the two values is called hysteresis and the Schmitt trigger acts as a memory element. The threshold values in these case are 2/3VCC and 1/3VCC . The upper comparator trips at 2/3VCC and the lower comparator trips at input voltage compared to this threshold values by the individual comparators and flip flop is set or reset accordingly. Based on this output becomes high or low. DIAGRAM:
RESULT: Using IC 555 timer the Schmitt trigger circuit is constructed and studied. The triggering voltage is noted for various R1 and R2 combinations.
