HBO Assignment

Situation:
During his college summer, David Fletcher began working on Wall Street as a clerk. He later
advanced to the position of security analyst at a New York trading firm. He joined Jenkins as a
portfolio manager for the Emerging growth fund division after gaining a variety of experiences.
They were a close-knit group with a relaxed work environment at Jenkins. They had great
success as a small team, and David attempted to expand the organization's network by bringing
on additional members without consulting Stephanie. His team-building exercises did not go as
well as expected and heightened the tenseness. Between Whitney and Doyle, there existed
resentment. Whitney had been a devoted employee for a long time, but because of the problems,
she intended to leave the company. Now that Doyle is leaving his job, the pressure might lessen.
David is now attempting to reassemble the squad by adding a new member.

Actors:
1. David Fletcher - Portfolio Manager, Emerging Growth Fund, JFP
2. Paul Jenkins - CEO, JFP
3. Edward Lodge - General Partner, Jenkins
4. Stephanie Whitney - Administrative Assistant, JFP
5. Robert Tepper - Portfolio Manager, JFP
6. Brian Doyle - Financial Consultant
7. Rachel Kindred - Analyst
8. Donald Fiske - Prospective Hiring
9. Mary Robinson - Prospective Hiring

Process:
The case involves group dynamics and decision making.

Suggested Actions:
The possible actions are:
1. David can hire Donald Fiske
2. David can hire Mary Robinson
3. After consulting with the staff and doing a thorough search, David can bring on another
new hire

Possible Solutions:
David is fully dedicated to the team's objective in this instance and is aware of what the group
will accomplish once it has come together. As evidenced by his "student-teacher" relationship
with Stephanie, David is also good at helping his team members feel a sense of reciprocity with
one another. He needs to make the appropriate hires now if he wants his staff to work as
effectively as it did before.
David will appoint Donald Fiske. This is due to the fact that, despite Mary's favourable initial
impression, there is no guarantee that she will be able to collaborate with the members
productively in the long run. Additionally, concentrating only on her area of knowledge would not
ensure her success because David's team works in a variety of industries, which may need her
to collaborate with other team members who are also specialists in those fields. On the other
hand, working with a motivated team will significantly advance her portfolio management
abilities. Joining David's team could be a wise career decision for her if she has the
interpersonal skills necessary to get along with and work effectively with her team members.
But if we look at Donald Fiske in this instance, he has long worked as a consultant for JFP. He is
more intimately connected to each member of the team and is already familiar with how the
organization operates. He has also managed high-tech investments before. Right now, David's
team needs a person with the right knowledge and ability to fit in. Given that teams are already
the main source of their problems, Donald Fiske would be the ideal option at this time.
