LABORATORY

MAGNETIC FIELD OF A SOLENOID

BIOFISICA 2
BIOQUIMICA - BIOTECNOLOGIA
I SEM 2022

General objective

Find the number N of a solenoid measuring the magnetic field in its interior.

Specific objetives

1.Make plots of the different variables.

2. Use the linear regression method to fit one variable in terms of the other one.

Theory

See masterclass 14

Materials

1. Solenoid with an unknown number of turns.

2. Vernier caliper
3. Digital multimeter
4. Hall effect sensor for measuring the magnetic field.
5. Connection cables: banana to alligator cables, banana to banana cable.
6. Electric current source.
7. Computer or cel phone for data taking.

Procedure

1. Connect the banana plug of the black cable to the current source and the alligator
plug to the solenoid.
2. Connect the banana plug of the red cable to the current source and the other
banana plug to the multimeter.
3. Finally connect the banana plug of the other red cable to the mA output of the
multimeter and the alligator plug to the solenoid (see figure 1).

Figure 1: connection of the cables.

4. For the data taking we will use the magnetic field sensor. Put it inside the solenoid
horizontally. Make sure that the sensor end is located at the middle of the solenoid. See
figure 2.

Figure 2: location of the sensor

5. Connect your cel phone to the sensor and open the “vernier graphical analysis”
application.

6. Select the option “metros” in order to see the measurement of the magnetic field, you
can also set it to “no graphic”.

7. Switch on the current source and change the current moving the rheostat button.

8. Make a table Magnetic field vs current:

B (mT) I (mA)

9. Use the vernier caliper to measure the longitude of the solenoid.

10. Fit the data and find the number of turns of the solenoid.
