Pledge-
Ques- Ans

Q1. Define the following-

1. Photosynthesis- The process by which green plants make their own food from carbon
dioxide and water in the presence of sunlight and chlorophyll is called photosynthesis.
2. Stomata- Tiny pores on the undersurface of leaves that allow air and water vapour to go
in and out of the leaves are called stomata.
3. Food Chain- A chain that shows a series of organisms where each member depends on
the one before as a source for food is called food chain. A food chain always start with a
producer (green plants).

Q2. Where do underwater plants get carbon dioxide from?

Ans. In underwater plants, the leaves absorb carbon dioxide from the water through their
surface. They do not have stomata to absorb the gas from air.

Q3. Why do insectivorous plants eat insects though they prepare food by photosynthesis?
Give examples of these plants.

Ans. Insectivorous plants cannot get enough nutrients from the soil in which they grow, so they
have modified leaves to trap the insects and use them as their food.

Example- Pitcher plant, Venus flytrap, Sticky sundew, Bladderwort

Q4. Give reason-

a) Plants growing on mountains have slanted branches and wax coated needle-like
leaves.
Ans. Plants growing on mountains have slanted branches which allows snow to slide off
easily. Wax coated needle- shaped leaves protect them from extreme cold.

b) Plants, like Mangroves growing in swampy areas have breathing roots.

Ans. Plants like mangroves grow in swampy areas where the soil is salty and sticky.
Mangroves have breathing roots above the soil to absorb air.

HOTS

Q1. Kapil took a potted plant and kept it inside a cupboard. Even though it was watered, the
plant died. Why?
Ans. A plant needs sunlight, water, and carbondioxide for photosynthesis. Since light was not
available to the potted plant, the plant died.

Q2. Non-green plants do not make their own food. Why?

Ans. Non-green plants do not make their own food because they do not have chlorophyll, which
is essential for the photosynthesis. They absorb the nutrients from the plants on which they
grow.

Q3. We should avoid sleeping under trees at night.

Ans. At night, trees take oxygen and release carbon dioxide. While sleeping under a tree we
would breathe a large amount of carbon dioxide which can be harmful for us.
