PASSAGE FROM IMPORTANCE OF HERITAGE

Q1. Read the passage below and answer the
questions that follow
a) Why do you think the archaeologists list the
location of each item?
b)What do you think the archaeologists will do with
their findings?

c) What do you think they might learn about the

people who lived on the site?
d)Why do you think it is important to preserve the
sites like the one in the article?
Suggested Answers
a. Possible questions for the archaeologist could
include: “What do you hope to find?”, “Where
will the artefacts be displayed?”, “What is the
importance of the findings?”, “How did the
topography and agriculture influence the lives of
the people who lived in the settlement?” etc.
b. The archaeologists list the location of where
everything is found because this information will
help them get a fuller picture of what the site
looked like when it was inhabited. For example,
a number of pottery items may indicate an
eating area or an area where food was prepared.
Tools or other implements may shed light on
agricultural practices or mining activity.
c. The archaeologists will probably send their
findings to museums when they have finished
cataloging and testing the items. Artefacts
will be carbon dated, a procedure from which
scientists can discover the time frame to which
they belong.
d. Archaeologists can learn how ancient civilisations
interacted with the natural environment – how
the environment influenced their dwellings, diet,
economy, and pastimes. They can learn whether
the inhabitants were hunters and gatherers,
farmers, tradesmen or warriors, etc.
e. It is important to preserve our links to the past
because it is what has influenced students’
beliefs, values and national identity. These links
are also important in keeping family bonds strong
as the stories and traditions are handed down
from generation to generation.
