A significant leadership experience I had was sitting down with my mentor to review and
modify the walkthrough and feedback system as we prepare for the upcoming school year. Due
to the high turnover of staff and arrival of new teachers to our campus, it was critical to refine
our previous walkthrough journal to fit the needs and goals of staff individually and as a team.
First, we discussed positive aspects of last year’s walkthroughs and areas of improvement that
would support returning and new members. Then, I helped my mentor to develop a theme that
aligned with our staff. Most of our teachers are transferring from other schools or arriving from
other countries, which gave us a thought of turning it into journal about traveling 180 days
towards success. Also, she asked for my input on including a tab in the journal where teachers
state their goals for the quarter, how they plan to achieve it, and an opportunity to self-reflect on
their walkthrough performance. One suggestion I offered was asking teachers to set one goal per
quarter to focus on a specific area of performance. Furthermore, Ms. Presley asked me to create
journals for all teachers on campus and ensure that they were correctly labeled in their assigned
Google Drive folder. This experience helped me to gain ideas on how I could provide feedback
During this experience, I learned about the importance of developing a walkthrough and
feedback system that focuses on supporting the professional growth and enhancement of
instruction in the classroom. As I sat with my mentor to review and modify the walkthrough
journal, I understood that the journal is an effective approach to help teachers record their

progress throughout the school year using the feedback, self-reflection, and guidance provided
by our administration team. This experience aligns with the Educational Leadership Constituent
Council (ELCC) standards as it is noted in standard 2.3 where “Candidates understand and can
develop and supervise the instructional and leadership capacity of school staff” (National Policy
Board for Educational Administration, 2011). Through the use of a journal, our administration
will provide feedback on strengths, areas of growth, and give them a platform to share their self-
reflection based on how they performed during the walkthrough. This approach will support
One area of leadership I will take part in is meeting with the cafeteria manager to discuss
the upcoming school year. As we transition to kindergarten through eighth grade, we will discuss
distribution of breakfast, lunch, and procedures to ensure students receive food throughout the
day. Additionally, we will address reduced or free lunch, and how we will schedule recess and
lunch periods based on grade levels. This experience will help me learn about the planning
aspect of recess and lunch periods during the school year as a future leader.
