Welcome to this Digit Placement and Place Values Learning Course.

This course covers the decimal point, and place values of whole numbers
and decimals. At the end of this course you should be able to correctly
interpret the placement of digits in whole numbers and decimals, and
calculate the place value of digits in whole numbers and decimals.

There will be a final assessment at the end of this course to test your
knowledge. You must pass the final assessment to receive credit for this
course.

Whole numbers

Whole numbers are defined as numbers that do not include a part of a


whole. This includes 0,1,2,3 and so on.
Placement of Whole Numbers

The value of a digit in a number is determined by its placement in the


number. Each equivalent value of the placements moving from right to left
is increasing by a multiple of 10. This means that the place value of digit in
the thousands place is ten times larger than the same digit in the hundreds
place.

Let's look at a random number, say Seven hundred forty-one thousand


three hundred fifty-six. As you can see from the image, the ones place is in
the farthest right, and the value increases by a multiple of 10 as it moves to
the left.

A digit's place value represents the digit's value in the number based on it's
position. To get the place value of a digit, you need to multiply the digit by
the equivalent value of it's placement.

This means that in the example above, the 5 in the tens place has a place
value of 5 multiplied by 10, which is equal to 50, while 4 has a place value of
40,000.

Decimals

Not all numbers are whole numbers. Some can be just a part of a whole,
and can be written as decimals or fraction. This lesson will focus on
decimals and how to interpret decimal placements.

The Decimal Point

The decimal point separates whole numbers from the decimals. It is written
at the right, just after the ones digit, which in this case, is 7. Numbers at the
left of the decimal points are whole numbers while numbers on the right of
the point are decimals.

Placement of Decimals

Placements of decimals are similar to placements in whole numbers, with a


few differences. First difference is that unlike whole numbers, decimals do
not have an equivalent to the ones place and starts with the tenths place
positioned at the right of the decimal point.

Place values of decimals also get smaller by a multiple of ten moving from
left to right. For example, 0.02 is larger than 0.009 even though 9 is the
larger digit.

Just like in whole numbers, the place value of a decimal number is


calculated by multiplying the digit to the equivalent value of its placement.

In the example above, you can calculate the place value of 7 by simply
multiplying 7 and 0.001 since it is in the thousandths place, and you'll get
0.007.
