Biographical Critique of “The Weeping Woman by Pablo Picasso”
The Weeping Woman is a painting finished by Pablo Picasso in France, 1937.
While looking at the painting and based on reading on the description provided, the
critique had found a certain connection regarding the painting and the painter.
These connections mentioned had taken into consideration to understand
furthermore about the painting and things behind such masterpiece.

Cubism is the style used in this painting, and according to other critiques, the
painting could be considered to be expressionism. Literally speaking, the painting
has vibrant colours which is opposite to the emotion of the woman in the painting.
The lines, shapes, and edges of the said painting is sharp and there is zero to
minimal curves found in the painting. Despite of the vibrant colours used – mainly
green, yellow, purple, red – it won’t deceive the viewer in to thinking that the
meaning behind the art is as joyful as the colours used.

The aspects of the author’s personal life is relevant to this painting. He invented the
style of art “cubism”, together with Georges Braque” which he uses as a style in
making “The Weeping Woman.” He got the idea of making the painting in cubism
style earlier on his age. Also, Picasso’s partner, Dora Maar, as the model of the
weeping woman. These things mentioned which are strongly connected into how
Picasso created The Weeping Woman are all relevant into the making the painting
because they all came and inspired into things from his personal life. Which says a
lot about someone who just created a masterpiece base on first-hand information.
Just like any other painters in the planet, Pablo Picasso create this masterpiece
based on his ideas or major concerns. According to the brief description given,
Picasso painted Weeping Woman in 1937, just after he completed his mural. The
mural mentioned, Guernica, is a chilling depiction of the bombing of the Basque
town in Guernica. The connection between this mural and his The Weeping Woman
is it had been linked to the figure of a grieving mother in Guernica who clasps her
dead child to her chest. Before the critique proceed to the meaning behind the
painting, it is safe to mention that these paintings depicts the painter’s patriotism
and sense of justice.
The meaning behind the painting is an unspeakable grief of pain, representing
universal suffering. Again, despite of the vibrant colours used in the painting, the
critique thinks that the sharp edges and lines in the painting, the fragmented features
represents the strength in the woman’s personality. However, the minimal curve
mentioned in this critique is found around the woman’s eyes, looking down and
depressive. Hence, the sad vibe of the painting.
The connection of the meaning of the painting to the painter is the way the painter
is saddened about what has happened in Guernica. Aforementioned, the painting
depicts the painter’s patriotism and sense of justice. How is that? Pablo Picasso’s
town of birth is Spain and Guernica is a Spanish Town. Picasso linked the painting
to the figure of a grieving mother in Guernica who clasps her dead child to her chest
which gives off a very sad and grieving vibe but it might also be Picasso himself
was sad and grieving after the Nazis bombed Guernica, killing women and children,
which what shook to his core and painted the masterpiece.

It is amazing how an artist’s inspiration could be from anything or anyone, but the
critique is far way more amaze because Picasso had used his own things to create
such meaningful and beautiful art. The biographical approach made by the critique
has accomplished its purposes, tracing the concerns of the painting, the meaning
behind it, connecting it to Picasso’s personal life and major concerns.
