IoT coursework 2
Part A

 What is the minimum number of piconets required for the deployment of these devices
and why? (5 marks)

The minimum number of piconets required for these devices is 2. This is because standard Bluetooth
only allows up to seven active slave devices per piconet and there are 10 devices in total so at least 2
are needed to deploy all of these devices.

 Determine:

a) How many Master devices are needed in order to form a scatternet connecting all of the
multi-sensor devices (5 marks) . Identify appropriate location(s) for the Master device(s)
assuming that i) the maximum sensitivity of any slave multi-sensor device is -60 dBm, ii) the
appropriate path loss model is considered for determining the received power, iii) the Master
Device(s) can only be placed along the dashed line as shown in the space layout (5 marks).

For my student ID ‘10062925’, n = 5

Using the path loss equation:

𝑑
̅̅̅̅(𝑑) = 𝑃𝐿
𝑃𝐿 ̅̅̅̅(𝑑0 ) + 10𝑛 log( )
𝑑0

Rearranging for d gives:

̅̅̅̅ ̅̅̅̅ (𝑑0)
𝑃𝐿 (𝑑)−𝑃𝐿
𝑑 = 𝑑0 × (10 10𝑛 )

Using the sensitivity of the device the maximum distance is:

60−6
𝑑 = 1 × (1010×5 ) = 101.08 ≈ 12.02𝑚

However for Bluetooth Classic (v1.x) the maximum range is 10m so that will be used.

Using trigonometry it can be calculated that the furthest

distance along the centre line the master device can sit going
away from the slave device is approximately 9.165 metres (as
shown in the diagram)

Because this reaches further than half way along the room it
shows that all of the slave devices would be able to reach a
10
single master device placed in the centre of the room,
9.165
however because of the 7 device maximum for each piconet,
two master devices will be needed to form two piconets into a
scatternet

An appropriate location identified for the
master devices is 4.5m in from either end of

subsequently a scatternet, I have used
trigonometry to find the distances from 4m 4m Piconet
each slave device to the master devices and 1

because all of the distances are within the
maximum, it can be concluded that the
shown locations are suitable for the master

Part B – Changing the slave device sensitivity to -40 dBm
 What is the minimum number of piconets required for the deployment of these devices
and why? (5 marks) The minimum number of piconets required for these devices is 2. This
is because standard Bluetooth only allows up to seven active slave devices per piconet and
there are 10 devices in total so at least 2 are needed to deploy all of these devices.

 Determine:

 How many Master devices are needed in order to form a scatternet connecting all of the

assuming that i) the maximum sensitivity of any slave multi-sensor device is -40 dBm, ii)
the appropriate path loss model is considered for determining the received power, iii) the
Master Device(s) can only be placed along the dashed line as shown in the space layout (5
marks).

For my student ID ‘10062925’, n = 5

Using the path loss equation:

𝑑
̅̅̅̅(𝑑) = 𝑃𝐿
𝑃𝐿 ̅̅̅̅(𝑑0 ) + 10𝑛 log( )
𝑑0

Rearranging for d gives:

̅̅̅̅ (𝑑)−𝑃𝐿
𝑃𝐿 ̅̅̅̅ (𝑑0)
𝑑 = 𝑑0 × (10 10𝑛 )

Using the sensitivity of the device the maximum distance is:

40−6
𝑑 = 1 × (1010×5 ) = 100.68 ≈ 4.79𝑚
Using trigonometry it can be calculated that the furthest
distance along the centre line the master device can sit
going away from the slave device is approximately 2.64
metres (as shown in the diagram).

There would need to be 4 master devices to connect all

of the devices into a scatternet. This is because a single
master device will be able to connect to a maximum of 4
slave devices, as each device is 3m apart from the next
going parallel along the room however it has been
calculated that the furthest distance along the centre line
that a slave can reach a master device is 2.64 metres,
4.79m
therefore in order to connect the devices the master will
have to be within that range which only allows a 2.64m
maximum 4 slaves to connect to a single master device, 4m
therefore 3 master would be needed.

As the piconets need to intersect to form a scatternet, 4

devices will be needed to form the 4 piconets shown in
the diagram
3m
An appropriate location identified for the 4.27m 4.27m
master devices is to be placed every 3 metres
along the centre line. As mentioned previously 4.27m
4.27m 3m
the 4 devices are needed in order to have the 4.27m 4.27m
piconets form a scatternet and using
trigonometry, as shown below, to calculate the 4.27m
4.27m
3m 4.27m
distance between the master and slave 4.27m

devices, it shows that the distance is less than

the previously calculated maximum distance 4.27m 4.27m
3m 4.27m
and therefore proves that these locations are 4.27m

appropriate.
