PERFORMANCE, SEWING THREAD WSS-M8P25-C

PERFORMANCE, SEWING THREAD , DRY , SHIFT BOOT WSS- M8P 25- D

1. SCOPE

This specification defines the performance requirements for sewing threads used in functional and
decorative purposes tor interior trim vehicle components.

2. APPLICATION

This specification was released originally for material used in sewing operations in the manufacture of
interior trim vehicle components. Table 1 indicates recommended usage per thread size (Tex/Metric-M)
and fiber content. Other applications not listed in this table will be considered after evaluation by
Materiats Engineering based on the proposed use.

Nylon is the recommended fiber content. Certain regions (for example China) may require the use of
polyester due to fiber availability. Polyester thread will be required for areas of high UV exposure such
as Instrument Panels (IP ' s) for decorative stitching .

WSS- M8P25- C contains the typical lubricant on the thread as selected by the thread supplier

WSS - M8P25 - D is produced dry to aid in the shift boot component level testing far liquid penetration.

3. REQUIREMENTS

Threads to be used in the application of serging and embroidery for floor mats must meet WSS - M8P22 -
A , Performance, Floor Mat, Serge and Embroidery Thread, In addition , specific material specification
WSB- M15H64- A/latest will need to be met based on application use.

3.1 APPROVED SOURCES

This specification requires the use of approved sources. Only the sources identified on the
Ford Approved Source List ( ASL) can be used when this specification is listed on the drawing,
CAD file, or other documents. The list of approved sources is located within Ford at
www mats. ford, com or available externally through a Ford Materials Engineer.

3,2 APPEARANCE

The color, pattern, and finish shall match the approved Corporate Design master sample

3.3 BALANCE

Take a one meter length of sewing thread drawn freely from the side of the spool (without undue
tension and without passing it through any restriction such as fingers, etc.) and bring the thread
together to form a free hanging loop. In this position, the thread must not twist upon itself more
than twice .

3.4 NUMBER OF KNOTS

The thread spool shall be free from all imperfections of such character which would cause the
thread to break during sewing.

ENGINEERING MATERIAL SPECIFICATION

WSS- M8P25-C/D
3.8 FUNCTIONAL SEWING TEST

After the thread has been tested per the requirements stated above, it shall be assessed by a sewing
test conducted under normal production conditions. The thread must process under production
conditions without any reservations and meet the sewn seam requirements of the cover material
specifications . Supplier's deliveries can be rejected because of excessive rates of breakage and/ or
other manufacturing difficulties (knots, foreign matter, etc ). In addition , after sewing, the thread shall
not exhibit objectionable streaks or any change in hue or purity of color , or transfer residue.

4. GENERAL INFORMATION

The information given below is provided for clarification and assistance in meeting the requirements of
this specification. Contact gmfs@ford.com for questions concerning Engineering Material Specifications.

Drawing call-outs shall state Thread Type Designation and Size. Examples would be:
WSS- M8P25- A/N9Q, WSS- M8P25- A/Tex 90/Nylon or WSS-M8P 25- A/M3 0/Nylon

Refer to Table 1 for Thread Type Designations. N90= Nylon, Tex 90/M30.

4.1 Purchase departments will ensure that the material defined in this specification and shipped to
any one assembly plant will be produced by one supplier only. In the event of a Global
Program or Regional duplication , each regional location of the supplier for this specification
must provide a construction package and be approved to meet this specification.

4.2 APPROVAL OF MATERIALS

Suppliers desiring approval of their materials shall first obtain an expression of interest from
Purchasing , Design or Product Development , and Materials Engineering, The supplier shall
submit a completed copy of their laboratory test reports, signed by a qualified and authorized
representative of the test facility, demonstrating full compliance with all the requirements of the
Material Specification. Tested material samples must be available for review upon request and
kept for a minimum of one year. Upon request, the supplier will review the associated quality
control documents (Process Failure Mode and Effects Analysis, Control Plans, Certification
testing) with Ford.

4.3 SUPPLIER ' S ONGOING RESPONSIBILITY

Ail materials must be equivalent in all characteristics to the material upon which approval was
originally granted.

Prior to making any changes to the material originally approved, whether or not such changes
affect the material' s ability to meet the specification requirements, the supplier shall notify the
affected Supplier Technical Assistance ( STA) , Purchasing , and Materials Engineering activities
of the proposed changes ( with reasons) by submission of a completed Suppliers Request for
Engineering Approval, SREA.

For parts and components using Ford Engineering Material Specifications, all samples tested
to the specifications for Design Verification ( DV ), Production Verification ( PV) and Producation
Part Approval Process ( PPAP ) sign off must be kept until Job 1 .

4.4 RESTRICTED SUBSTANCE MANAGEMENT STANDARD

Substance restrictions imposed by regulations or Company direction applies to the materials

addressed by this document. The restrictions are identified in the Restricted Substance
Management Standard WSS -M99P9999 - A /latest which is updated yearly. It is the supplier’s
responsibility to comply with this standard on a continuing basis.
