LEGACY OF PANAYI THODU

Natural Streams and rivers are one of the integral parts of the landscape that carry water and
sediment from high elevations to downstream lakes, estuaries, and oceans. More over In addition
to transporting water and sediment, natural streams also provide the habitat for many aquatic
organisms including fish, amphibians, insects, mollusks, and plants. Trees and shrubs along the
banks provide a food source and regulate water temperatures. Channel features like pools, riffles,
steps, and undercut banks provide diversity of habitat, oxygenation, and cover. Panayi thodu is
one of such kind of natural stream that has an old legacy and having a great history, culture and
traditions with the local context and the people. As the years are going the old legacy of this
stream is vanishing. Panayi thodu is in the central part of the Malappuram district of Kerala
which connects with the Kadalundi River and joins the Arabian Sea in the east. The entire beauty
and the landscape of panayi is well connected with this natural stream. The beauty of this place is
defined by the wide verity of flora and fauna existing in the context and which connects the local
people with the natural beauty of this place. The panayi thodu is acting as the major source water
for irrigation in the local area and also connects directly and indirectily with the various
ecosystem services.
Panayi thodu has a great legacy in the past, which was part of every local people in their past
history. A day of local farmer starts with this natural stream. In past years this natural stream was
the major source of water. The people mainly used this water for their day to day activities and
also for irrigation. Before 10 years the banks of the panayi thodu was covered with paddy fields
and which created a visual hierarchy for the space with the Pandallor hill in the background.
Now in most of the paddy fields people started construction and there by destroying the beauty
of the context.

Panayi thodu connects with various ecosystem services and also which links the different
ecosystems. In supporting service which helps in creating Biodiversity, create habitat for various
aquatic organisms and supporting the local flora for and creating a habitat for them. In regulating
service considered as a major factor for the micro climate of the region, control the water table of
the particular region and control flooding in the location. Culturally which has a major
importance providing opportunity for social gathering, creating aesthetic feature for the locality
and most of the local people using the edges for evening recreational activities. This natural
stream is providing livable ecosystem for various animals and plants. The panayi thodu has a
great importance in maintaining the local climate and biodiversity of this particular region. In
most of the area of the stream were constructed with small check dam and which helps in
providing water for irrigation and thereby it took a place in the life of local people.

Over exploitation of natural resources affects the life of natural streams. Due to waste dumbing
in the banks and land filling the past legacy and beauty of the stream is reducing. As a solution to
this the younger generation of the area is taking various measures to recreate the past legacy of
the stream. The youth started to clean the stream and started to create a natural leisure area
around the banks of the stream which can again become part of the daily life of the local people.

As a result of starting of recreating the past legacy the entire area is now converting as
recreational area which attracts more people to the area and thereby can create an interaction
with nature and the people. The main intention of the youth is to create an averseness regarding
the protection of the natural resources and it is on its way to the success.
