Conventional signal processing methods used toexamine te faults in non-stationary vibration signals have been proved to be inefficient This paper aims to detect valve leakage in a RC by evaluating the performance of signal {decomposition techniques ie. empirical mode decomposition (EMD) and recently devel~ a ‘oped varational mode decomposition (VM) These non-stationary signal prcesing ech peace ‘iques have been wily applied for condion monitoring of mechanical ystems Inthe Vater sl resent study the vibration signals of RC at diferent level of leaks under limited speed epoca compressor ‘ariton wer acquted, decomposed and compared. To detect the faut features exbhing Sion pocesing leakage, the vibration signals were decomposed by EMD and VMD respectively. Post decomposition, FFT analysis along with RMS and kurtosis were evaluated from decom- posed signals. The characteristics frequencies were clearly exhibited by VMD and the responses of kurtosis were also better with VM. The fault detection performance of YYMD was found better than EMD, (© 2018 Elsevier Lt. All rights reserved, 1. Introduction Reciprocating compressors (RC) are used in almost every industry for compressing the fluid. Valve failure of a RC cause pressure drop of the exhaust compressed fluid resulting inefficient compression. Failure detection ofa valve is essential, An Incorrect indication of failure by signal processing techniques could result in both energy and material loss Vibration signals of RC are non-stationary in nature [1,2]. Condition monitoring of a RC based an vibration signals by var- {ous signal processing techniques have been studied [3-1 Furthermore, based on vibration signals, Qin etal [12) pre- sented a new approach by de-noising via basis pursuit, feature extraction via wave matching to diagnose different compressor valve faults. Tran etal. [13] proposed an approach by associating the Teaget-Kaiser energy operator for diagnos ing different compressor valve faults using vibration pressure and current signals. Fora small RC, Yang etal. [14] presented a comparison of the wavelet transform between raw noise and vibration signals. Cui etal. [15] diagnosed valve faults using, different information entropy features extracted from vibration signals. For fault detection of valves of a RC, a technique based on rational hermite interpolation have been used to envelop the signal (16). Wang et al. [17] proposed an EMD. * Corespoding author. malades siasitigmal com (V. Sharma. anand. acin (A. Pare). hugs: do10:1016).ymssp2018.07.029 (08852790 2018 sever Al igh reserved.
