Objective:
To determine the modulus of elasticity of different materials;

Apparatus:
Beam Apparatus, 4 test bars made of Al, Cu, Brass and Steel (each 20 mm x 6mm)
Rider for weight, Suspender for weights, Weight set, Dial gauge with holder,

Theory:
Young's Modulus (E) (also known as the Young Modulus, modulus of elasticity,
elastic modulus or tensile modulus) is a measure of the stiffness of a given material. It
is defined as the “ratio of tensile stress to the tensile strain” (when the material is
loaded within its elastic limit). This can be experimentally determined from the slope
of a stress –strain curve created during tensile test conducted on a sample of the
material. Young's modulus is named after Thomas Young.

To find Modulus of Elasticity using Simply Supported Beam (Load applied at center):

Apparatus Setup:
Procedure:

The experiment is set up as described in the figures. The load is applied at

a = 500mm.The deflection of the bar is measured at different values of applied load.

Follow the following steps:

1. Fasten the articulated supports at a distance of 1000 mm.
2. Push the rider for the weight suspender on to the bar and place the bar on the
supports.
3. Loose the locking screw on the support.
4. Adjust the height of the support using the rotary knob until the bar is horizontal.
5. Re-secure the support using the locking screw.
6. Set the scale on the dial gauge to zero by adjusting and twisting.
7. Suspend the weight and load the bar.
8. Read the deflection on the dial gauge for different values of applied load and
record the readings in the table.
