Objective:
To determine the modulus of elasticity of different materials;
Apparatus:
Beam Apparatus, 4 test bars made of Al, Cu, Brass and Steel (each 20 mm x 6mm)
Rider for weight, Suspender for weights, Weight set, Dial gauge with holder,
Theory:
Young's Modulus (E) (also known as the Young Modulus, modulus of elasticity,
elastic modulus or tensile modulus) is a measure of the stiffness of a given material. It
is defined as the “ratio of tensile stress to the tensile strain” (when the material is
loaded within its elastic limit). This can be experimentally determined from the slope
of a stress –strain curve created during tensile test conducted on a sample of the
material. Young's modulus is named after Thomas Young.
