You are on page 1of 6

Congratulations on making it this far in your ALX journey.

I’m here to tell you a little bit more about The Room Fellowship program. This is the next
step in your journey with the African Leadership Group, and the next step on your career
journey as well.

Here at ALG, we have identified a big problem that makes it hard for talent to find jobs.
Often times, young talent doesn’t stand out from the crowd. LinkedIn alone has over 1
billion profiles. There can be thousands of applicants for one single job. It’s difficult to be
noticed by employers.

The job search can be lonely and difficult, especially when you don’t have many
connections.

And, good jobs are hard to find.

According to Business Insider, as much as 80% of new jobs are filled by word of mouth,
and at least 70% of jobs are never even advertised.

Even when you apply for a job that is advertised, it’s a challenge to fully showcase your
skills, talents, and abilities. When you apply for a job “cold,” employers may only look
very briefly at your resume and cover letter. So this can be a very difficult method for
demonstrating to employers what you are capable of.

We believe in you, and we believe that you are capable of more than just what is
reflected on your resume. This is a big part of why we started The Room Fellowship.

Hopefully you’re a little bit more excited to learn more about what The Room Fellowship
is.

There are 3 ways that The Room Fellowship helps to accelerate the careers of the
world’s top young professionals.

First, The Room invests in job support. We represent you in the job marketplace. We
market you to employers and give you access to exciting opportunities.
You will gain experience, have the chance to work on different projects with local and
corporate clients, and-- in time-- can be eligible to work with a dedicated pathfinder to
help you make career choices.
Second, we provide continuous professional development. You can continue learning
and go beyond the ALX training you’ve already received. You can develop more
specialized skills that give you an edge in the job market. Once you are on the job, you
can still continue to grow the specific skills needed to advance in your career.

Third, we provide benefits and perks. We offer exclusive perks like credit cards, travel
experiences, Room Clubhouses, and much more. So you’ll get to enjoy a wide range of
perks which will help you start your career on the right note.

Let’s talk a little bit more about each of these three areas.

Job support.

The Room elevates your profile and helps you get discovered by employers. Right now
The Room is building its brand and making sure that the world knows that we have the
best, top vetted talent. We will continue to promote our brand and to promote you along
the way.

As a Fellow, you will be what we call “Room Certified,” signaling to companies and
employers that you are part of this top talent pool, and that you are ready for your next
job.

You’ll also get matched on our exclusive platforms. We have a big team as well as our
own digital platform, called The Room Portal. There you can create and update your
profile, share and showcase the things that you are good at, and get matched with
exciting job opportunities.

Once you become a Room Fellow, we will make considerable efforts to promote you to
employers. We’ll also connect you with access to spaces and events where you can
meet and network with employers.

In the future, we also plan to provide you with a Pathfinder. Pathfinders are people who
will help you on your journey, make specific recommendations for opportunities to
consider, and provide guidance on how you can further develop. We want to help you
navigate your mission and vision for your career now and going forward. We not only
want to help you get a job, but we want to be here for the longer term journey, as you
grow, learn, and advance.

Continuous Learning.
We also provide ongoing learning opportunities. We believe it’s very important for you to
keep gaining new skills over time. If you get a job through The Room, we will seek
feedback from your manager. This will allow us to work together to focus on the most
important areas to accelerate your development and growth. We’ll support you by
providing additional training, coaching, and certification. This will maximize your chances
of getting jobs and getting promoted.

In addition, you’ll gain access to exclusive learning opportunities. The Room taps into
our large network to provide unique opportunities to learn from industry professionals
from around the world. We host exclusive virtual and in-person events. We also form
partnerships with prestigious, state-of-the-art institutions to help further your
development.

Benefits and Perks

We are currently working on creating different perks that will accelerate your career and
get you started on the right foot as you enter the job market and continue to advance in
your career journey.

Just a few of the perks will be offering include:

So, how do you become a Room Fellow?

The first step is that you need to pass the quiz following this video with a score of 75% or
higher. This will help assure us that you understand the basics of what the program is
and what we expect from you if you join.
The second step is that you need to successfully graduate from your current ALX
program. This means you must meet all of the required criteria from your program
including submitting and passing all milestones.

Third, once invited, you need to complete your profile on The Room Fellow portal. And
you need to keep your profile updated with your current employment status. We will be
promoting you, but we also want you to be doing your part to look for opportunities as
well. It’s important that you keep your employment status current so that we can
accurately represent you to potential employers.

The fourth and final criteria is that you align with and uphold the values of being a Room
Fellow. I will talk more about these expectations in a moment.

Here’s something important for you understand about The Room Fellowship:
We don’t charge you anything to become a fellow. The Fellowship is free of cost as long
as you participate and meet the criteria for being a Room Fellow.

So how does it work? How are we able to keep it free?

We highly encourage all of our fellows to constantly be networking, applying for jobs, and
taking their future into their own hands.

We are also helping you, investing in your training, marketing you, connecting you to
relevant employment opportunities, and hopefully helping you land your next job.

If you are placed in a job through The Room, you will be asked to agree to be paid a fair
market salary.

Once you officially get the job, The Room will charge the employers it is working with for
access to you.
The Room is then able to make a profit that they will then reinvest in hundreds of
thousands of other young people, so that they too can access the opportunities that you
have received through ALX and The Room.

Through the payments from employers, we can sustain our business and keep doing the
work that we’re doing, which is to help you develop the skills you need and help place
you in a satisfying career.

What is expected of you as a fellow?

I’ve shared the criteria for becoming a fellow and now I’d like to talk a little bit more about
how you maintain your good standing as a Room Fellow.

There are 5 simple things you need to do to:

First, you need to show up on the platform and keep your profile up-to-date, especially
with your current employment status. We rely on your information to be current so that
we can track our impact and accurately represent Fellows to potential employers.

Second, you need to do what you say you’re going to do. Remember, you are not just
representing yourself, but also The Room as a whole. So we expect you to represent us
well, and always act with professionalism and dedication.

If you are matched with a job opening and agree to an interview, we expect you to show
up on time and prepared for that interview.

If you say you’re going to host an event for your fellow Fellows, then we expect that you
will indeed go through with it and make that happen.

We expect you to always honor any commitments and agreements that you make.

Third, we expect you to perform on the job. Remember that you have The Room’s stamp
of approval and it is important to represent The Room well. We expect you to always
give your work your very best effort, to practice a growth mindset, and be committed to
always learning and growing.

Fourth, we expect you to respect everyone, including your employer or potential

employers, your peers, and The Room team members. We hope this goes without
saying, but there is zero tolerance for bullying or disrespectful behavior at The Room.
Please treat everyone with kindness.

Fifth, we expect you to understand that you ultimately control your future. We are here to
support you and will equip you with tools and opportunities. But you are in the driver’s
seat, and finding work and advancing in your career require hard work that no one else
can do for you.

We tell you at ALX that you need to ‘do hard things’ and that applies equally here at The
Room.

We hope that you take full advantage of The Room’s offerings, while also being aware
that finding work requires creativity and hustle. We hope you will actively manage your
job search by doing things like: searching for opportunities, networking, applying for
relevant positions, going to events, and continuing to build the skills you need to
interview well and perform well on the job.

Lastly, I’m excited to share that if you meet or exceed our expectations, you will be
rewarded. We’re really excited to be launching a points program very soon, where you
will receive points for things like logging into the portal, updating your resume, updating
your job status, and mentoring a peer.

So we urge you to start contributing as soon as possible, to get yourself the best
possible advantage in the Fellowship.

Thank you so much for taking the time to watch this video.
You are, of course, welcome to watch this video again before you complete the required
quiz that follows.

If you do have any questions that are not answered in the video or by your peers, you
can email us at fellowship@theroom.com.

Thanks again and we look forward to seeing you soon in The Room portal!
