C. COURSE DESCRIPTION
Cost and Management accounting is a very important component of success of any large
undertaking within any jurisdiction. When we talk about cost and management accounting, we
usually keep in mind those accounting and costing techniques managers usually employ in
their daily decision-making roles.

This course seeks to introduce students to Cost and Management Accounting tools, methods and
techniques employed in ascertaining the cost of producing goods and rendering services. The
course will focus on the application of costing and management accounting techniques and
methods that aid management in performing their functions to enable them make informed
decisions. In this regard, you will learn to understand and apply such key terms of the
management accounting as decision-making, etiquettes of sound management, decision-making
costs, relevant costs, budgeting, investment appraisal etc. It also aims at equipping students to
apply accounting and costing techniques in preparing budgets and making short term decisions.

This course will be facilitated in the form of lectures, group works, class activity and project
presentations.

PREREQUISITE (IF ANY)


This course has no prerequisite because it is a second-year course. Students are however required to
have some level of accounting at the first degrees or from their work places.

D. COURSE OBJECTIVES
This course is designed to provide students with an understanding of Accounting and costing
techniques within the context of practical managerial decision-making processes in organizations.
Students/participants will be equipped with the necessary financial and managerial tools for short-
and long-term decision-making skills
At the end of the course, students would be expected to:
 Explain the nature cost and management accounting
 Classify and separate cost for decision making
 Apply Break-even analysis in decision making
 Explain the difference between job, batch, service and contract costing
 Identify the various relevant costs for decision making.
 Apply budgeting and budgetary control in decision making
 Apply standard costing for corrective action

E. COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES


At the end of this course, students will:
 Demonstrate understanding of cost and management decision-making techniques;
 Explain the Cost-Volume-Profit (CVP) analysis in a given situation;
 Identify the different pricing methods in cost and management accounting and elements that
goes into their determination;
 Prepare the necessary financial statements to aid management in decision making;

 Apply/Analyse costing techniques in short-term decision-making processes;
 Understand how managerial decision are made using costing and management techniques;
 Acquire analytical skills in the preparation of budgets for resource allocation;
 Ability to prepare short- and long-term budgets for organizations;
 Using the concepts of variance analysis for correctives measures in an organization;

The course will be assessed using the FORMATIVE AND SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT

K. FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT
Formative assessment or assessment for learningg involves a continuous way of checks and
balances in the teaching learning processes (Jeri, 2018).
The method allows Lecturers to check their learners' progress as well as the effectiveness of
their own practice, thus allowing for self-assessment of the student.

The following formative assessment methods will be used ANALYSIS OF STUDENTS


WORK. In this, the lecturer assign, collect and examine student work continuously to assess
student learning and to revise and improve teaching, THINK-PAIR-SHARE (TPS). This is a
collaborative learning strategy in which students work together to solve a problem or answer
a question about an assignment. This technique requires students to (1) think individually
about a topic or answer to a question; and (2) share ideas with classmates.

LEVERAGING OF TECHNOLOGY
Moodle, email, and WhatsApp, given convenience and speed, would be used to send and
retrieve course materials.
