“Change the mindset first, then wake up the mentality.

That’s the sentence that closes every time my coach gives material about Public Speaking. The
sentence sounds very simple. But that’s where my journey began.

Assalamualaikum warahmatullahi wa barakaatuh.

First of all we thank God for the presence of Allah SWT because we are still given the opportunity to
gather in this field in good health without any drawbacks. Thank you for the opportunity given to me
to be able to give a word or two at this time.

And I also I ask you to deliver your prayer and greetings to our prophet Muhammad SAW, who has
brought us which has brought us from dark-age to the age-lit, so we are always on the right path
until the end of the world.

Dear Honorable Judges.

And of course all my beloved friends and competitors here.

Is a great honor for me to give a brief speech on the “Powerful of mindset in education”.

Brothers and sisters.

This month, it was exactly one year ago when I attended a Public Speaking seminar that brought me
together with Coach Ranji Landrito. He is an expert trainer in Public Speaking. At first I thought it was
the first and the last meeting. However, it turned out that we were reunited at several events and
until finally I became one of the administrators of the community he had just started at that time.

From him I learned a lot about the power of mindset, through which I was able to stand here and
deliver this speech with confidence.

For me education is a very fundamental thing for us to be able to process and grow. Talking about
education, we are no longer talking about students in the classroom and there is a teacher in front
who is explaining the subject matter. More than that, education is all things that are part of the
learning process. Wherever, whenever, and from anything we can learn many things.

The power of thought patterns can change psychological aspects, and ultimately change a person’s
life. This was revealed by Dr. Carol S Dweck, professor in psychology from Stanford University. He
stated that success is not only influenced by ability and talent, but also by our mindset. Mindset,
according to Dweck, is a self-perception or self-theory that a person believes about himself.

In his book, Mindset: Changing the Way You Think to Fulfill Your Potential, Dweck states that there
are two types of mindset, namely: fixed mindset and growth mindset. So, how do these two types of
mindset affect the way a person lives?
A fixed mindset is a mindset that believes that basic qualities of oneself, such as intelligence or
talent, are permanent. Someone with a fixed mindset believes that the ability to do something is
influenced by genetic or innate factors. They believe that skills and expertise are given. They also
appreciate a good finish.

While the growth mindset is a mindset that believes that basic abilities can be developed through
hard work and dedication, intelligence, and talent are only initial capital. Someone with this mindset
believes that skills and expertise are something that can be built and developed. They really value
process improvement. As a result, there will be different reactions between people with a fixed
mindset and a growth mindset when facing challenges and failures in certain situations

I also realized that the power of the mindset had a lot of impact on every small change in my life.
Committed to growing one percent every day, made me dare to get out of my comfort zone and try
new things out there.

So how is the implementation of the mindset that develops in education?

Maybe we are already familiar with the slogan “Freedom of Learning” echoed by Mr. Nadiem
Makarim as the Minister of Education and Culture, Research and Technology of Indonesia. The
essence of independent learning is freedom in thinking both individually and in groups so that it can
produce students who are critical, creative, collaborative, innovative and participatory. With the
independence of learning, student involvement in learning will increase.

As we all know... that so far the education system in Indonesia has shaped us into students who are
less critical. We are required to always receive the material, and take the exam in accordance with
the answers that have been taught. The unfortunate fact is that we are used to judging critical
thinking as a form of protest. Whereas critical thinking allows us to respond to a problem from
various angles.

The ability to think critically will only grow if it is supported by an open culture. The Indonesian
nation has been colonized by the Dutch for too long and this has an impact that is not conducive to
the creation of an appropriate climate to foster critical thinking attitudes. The Indonesian nation has
already been formed into a nation that is “obedient” in all respects. This “obedient” culture relies
heavily on individual personas.

Then what is the solution? When we talk about education, sin and teachers are the most important
agents of change. The importance of knowledge of psychology to educators should be the
government’s attention. Why not? Because with knowledge of Psychology, educators can
understand each student’s characteristics and provide motivation according to these characters to
more effectively influence their enthusiasm for learning.
I hope that education that is currently being prioritized in Indonesia will be able to bring this nation
into a great and respected nation on the world stage.

Wassalamu’alaikum warahmatullahi wa barakaatuh
