MODULE 2: SURFACE AREA OF COMMON OBJECTS AND COMPOSITE OBJECTS

EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES:

At the end of this lesson, the students should be able:

1. Compute lateral surface area of common objects and composite objects.

2. Visualize how objects were formed by combining different shapes and figures.

TOTAL SURFACE AREA

The total surface area (TSA) of a solid object is the sum of the areas of the surfaces.
In some cases, we can use established formulas of very common everyday objects.
In other situations, we will need to derive a formula by using the net of an object.

TOTAL SURFACE AREA OF COMMON OBJECTS

CUBE: CUBOID: CYLINDER:

TSA = 6l2 TSA = 2(lw + lh + wh) TSA = 2𝞹r (r + h)

CONE: SPHERE:
PYRAMID:
TSA = 𝞹r (r + s) TSA = 4𝞹r2
TSA = b2 + 2bs

1
EXAMPLE:
1. Compute for the surface area of a triangular prism as shown.

SOLUTION:
Redraw the figure and subdivide it into
common shape.

𝑇𝑆𝐴 = 𝐴 + 𝐴 + 𝐴 + 2𝐴
𝐴 = 10𝑥20 = 200 𝑐𝑚
𝐴 = 8𝑥20 = 160 𝑐𝑚
𝐴 = 6𝑥20 = 120 𝑐𝑚
1
𝐴 = 𝑥8𝑥6 = 24 𝑐𝑚
2
𝑇𝑆𝐴 = 200 + 160 + 120 + 2(24)
𝑇𝑆𝐴 = 528 𝑐𝑚

2
Therefore, the total surface area of the triangular prism is 529 cm 2.
2. Compute for the total surface area of the given solid.

SOLUTION:

The composite solid consists of a cube of length 6 cm and a square pyramid

with base length b=6 cm and slant height, s =4 cm.

For the Total Surface area of the solid,

𝑻𝑺𝑨 𝒐𝒇 𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒑. 𝒔𝒐𝒍𝒊𝒅

= 𝑻𝑺𝑨𝒐𝒇𝒄𝒖𝒃𝒆(𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒖𝒔 𝒕𝒐𝒑) + 𝑻𝑺𝑨𝒐𝒇𝒑𝒚𝒓𝒂𝒎𝒊𝒅(𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒖𝒔 𝒃𝒐𝒕𝒕𝒐𝒎)
For the TSA of cube (minus the top portion),

𝑻𝑺𝑨𝒐𝒇𝒄𝒖𝒃𝒆(𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒖𝒔 𝒕𝒐𝒑) = 𝟓𝒍𝟐 = 𝟓(𝟔𝒄𝒎)𝟐

𝑻𝑺𝑨𝒐𝒇𝒄𝒖𝒃𝒆(𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒖𝒔 𝒕𝒐𝒑) = 𝟏𝟖𝟎 𝒄𝒎𝟐
For the TSA of pyramid (minus the bottom portion),
𝑻𝑺𝑨𝒐𝒇𝒑𝒚𝒓𝒂𝒎𝒊𝒅(𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒖𝒔 𝒃𝒐𝒕𝒕𝒐𝒎) = 𝟐𝒃𝒔 = 𝟐(𝟔𝒄𝒎)(𝟒𝒄𝒎)
𝑻𝑺𝑨𝒐𝒇𝒑𝒚𝒓𝒂𝒎𝒊𝒅(𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒖𝒔 𝒃𝒐𝒕𝒕𝒐𝒎) = 𝟒𝟖 𝒄𝒎𝟐

𝑻𝑺𝑨 𝒐𝒇 𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒑. 𝒔𝒐𝒍𝒊𝒅 = 𝟏𝟖𝟎 𝒄𝒎𝟐 + 𝟒𝟖 𝒄𝒎𝟐

𝑻𝑺𝑨 𝒐𝒇 𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒑. 𝒔𝒐𝒍𝒊𝒅 = 𝟐𝟐𝟖 𝒄𝒎𝟐

Therefore, the total surface area of the given solid is 228 cm 2.
