III. PROCEDURES
A. Reviewing previous lesson or Review: Formulas in Solving for the Areas of the Following: Square, Rectangle,
presenting the new lesson Parallelogram, Trapezoid, Triangle
Give one example each for the above shapes. These may be in the form of a word
problem or a picture with given dimensions.

Mental Computation Drill: Solving for Areas of Plane Figures

Before the group activity ask theem about what should they remember while doing an
activity ( Setting Rules)
Play “Pass-It-On”
a) Teacher divides the class into 4 groups. Make sure every learners participates.
b) Teacher instructs the pupils in front to prepare a piece of paper (sheet), which will
be the group’s answer sheet.
c) Teacher shows a cut out of a plane figure with given dimensions. For example:

10 cm 5m

20 m 4m
6 dm 10 m
8m

d) Pupils in front solve mentally for the area and write their answer on the piece of
paper, with the proper label.
e) Teacher shows another picture of a plane figure with given dimensions.
f) The pupils in front pass the paper to the one behind them who, in turn, solve
mentally for the area.
g) Continue this until everyone in the group or column has participated.
h) They will now make a special figure out of the cut outs plane figure using a used
folder and masking tape
i) The first to finish with the correct anwers will be the winner
j) Teacher gives the correct answers.
k) The group with the correct answer and label gets 2 pts.
l) The group with the most number of points wins.
m) Make sure to praise learners work and give positive feedback

B. Establishing a purpose for the

lesson Look at your solid figures that group A & C made, what kind of solid figure is it?
A. Cube
Ask:
1) How many faces does it have ?
2) What is the shape of each face?
3) Are the faces congruent?
4) What is the formula for the area of square?
How about Group B & D
b) Rectangular prism.
Ask:
1) How many faces does it have?
2) Which faces are congruent?
3) What is the shape of each face?
4) What is the formula for the area of a rectangle?

What did you notice on the materials of the plane figure cut outs that you used in making
solid figures? ( used Folders)
What are the things you have that can still be recycled?
Why? In what way can you recycle them? ( Integration of ESP and Science Lessons)

C. Presenting examples/instances Present the ff. problem in the class. In power point presentation
of the new lesson 1. Mother is celebrating her birthday. Her children prepared a gift for her. They
have a gift wrapping paper that measures 900 square inches. Each edge of
the box is 12 inches. Do you think the children have enough wrapping
paper to cover the gift?
The pupils will investigate the ff.
a.Name of the solid
b.Number of faces
c.Shapes of faces
D. Discussing new concepts and Ask the ff. questions:
practicing new skill #1 a. What is the name of the solid figure? (cube)
b. How many faces does it have?(6 faces)
c. What is the shape of the faces? (square)
d. How do we know that the wrapping paper is enough? Present to the class
the net of the cube.

Find the area of each face. Explain the solution.

Area of a square= s x s
= 12 x 12
=144 square inches
Total area of all faces = 144 x 6 = 864 sq. inches
Therefore, the children have enough wrapping paper to cover the gift. How do you
call the total area of all the faces of a solid figure?
a.Define surface area. Page. 273
b. Based on the answers to the above questions, derive the formula for the surface
area of a cube.
Present a video clip about Finding the surface area of a prism
E. Discussing new concepts and Present the problem on power point presentation
practicing new skill #2 Gerald owns an antique shop. He is refinishing a rectangular jewelry box shown
below. The can of varnish he is using is enough liquid left in it to cover 30 cm2 is
there enough varnish left in the can to refinish the jewelry box?
Discuss the content on page 272 -273 of 21st Century Mathletes Textbook.
Let the pupils derive the formula in finding the surface area of a prism.

Discuss Example 1 on page 274 of txtbk

F. Developing mastery (Leads to Group Activity
Formative Assessment) Discuss the standard for group activity
(-read carefully the instruction, cooperate with other members, work quietly as
possible, respect individual ideas)
Engage learners in group hands-on activity to explore and discover the lesson

Each group will be given a worksheet and .

1) Give each group will be given a spatial figure.
Group Mathenic – Shoe Box
Group Mathlisto – Rubics Cube
Group Mathalino – Lunch Box
Group Mathgaling – big die
2) Let each group measure the dimensions of their spatial figure and solve for
its surface area.
3) Presentation for each group follows
G. Finding practical applications Pair Activity: Write the formula then solve. Write the unit of measure to be used in
of concepts and skills in daily each problem.
living 1) a cube whose edge is 15 cm
2) Cube: s=18cm
3) Rectangular Solid: l=18 cm, w= 7 cm, h=9 cm

4)

5.) 5 cm
H. Making generalizations and What is surface area?
abstractions about the lesson The surface area of a solid object is a measure of the total area that the surface of
the object occupies.
How do we find the surface area of cubes? Prisms?
A cube is a rectangular prism where all its sides are the same. The formula to find
the surface area of a rectangular prism is A = 2wl + 2lh + 2hw, where w is the
width, the l is the length, and the h is the height. To use this formula, we plug in our
values and then evaluate.
I. Evaluating learning I. Derive the formula and solve for the surface area of the following
