lessons
Gratitude is the quality or feeling of being thankful. Practicing gratitude has
incredible effects on us. It can improve our mental health and boost our
relationships with others.

Have you ever thought of expressing gratitude to your loved ones? One way of
showing gratitude to your loved ones is by giving gifts to them.

Situation: Connie decided to give a simple gift to her older sister. She used a
cube box for her gift. One side of the cube measures 20 cm. How big is the gift
wrapper needed to wrap the gift?

Use of HOTS questions

Discussion of the situation.
1. Why do you think Connie prepared a gift for her older sister? (HOTS)
2. Why is it important to express our gratitude to our loved ones?
(HOTS)
3. How did you show your gratitude to them? (HOTS)
4. What is asked in the problem?
5. What are given?

D. Discussing new concepts Use of Games

and practicing new skills #1. Discovery Learning

For us to be able to solve the problem, let us first find out what is the hidden
word to know the lesson for the day To open each box we have to tell the kind
of space figure is shown in each picture.

What is the hidden word?

Let us talk about surface area.

E. Discussing new concepts To know the exact area of gift wrapper Connie will use, we must find the
& practicing new skills #2 surface area of the rectangular prism represented by the gift box.

To determine the surface area of rectangular prism, you must identify what
plane figure is represented by every face of it.

Nets of Solid Figures

A net is a closed plane figure that can be folded into a closed 3-dimensional
figure.

Question: Which solid figure would this net cover?

First, visualize folding the net along each line to determine which solid figure it
would cover.

This is a net for a cube. If you folded it on each edge, or line, it would create a
cube.
In addition, the area of the net is equal to the surface area of the solid. You
can use nets to find the surface area of a solid figure.

Surface Area of Solid Figures

The surface area of a solid is the sum of the areas of all its faces.
What unit is used to measure surface area?
Surface area is measured in square units. Such as square feet (𝒇𝒕𝟐), square
inches (𝒊𝒏𝟐), square meters (𝒎𝟐), square kilometer ( 𝒎𝟐), square millimeters
(𝒎𝒎𝟐).

To let you know how big the gift wrapper you needed, you must know the
surface area of the cube box.

Notice that there are six square faces in the cube box when you unfold it. Let’s
find the area of each face by using what you know about squares to get the
surface area of the cube.
To get the area of a square, we use 𝑨= 𝒔𝟐, where A = area and s = side of the
square

Now, we can solve the total surface area of the cube box by adding the areas of
all its faces.
𝑆𝐴= 400 𝑐𝑚2+400 𝑐𝑚2+400 𝑐𝑚2+400 𝑐𝑚2+400 𝑐𝑚2+400 𝑐𝑚2
𝑆𝐴= 2 400 𝑐𝑚2
You need 𝟐 𝟒𝟎𝟎 𝒄𝒎𝟐 gift wrapper to wrap the gift for your older sister.

Discuss also the surface area of:
 Rectangular Prism
 Square Pyramid
 Cylinder
 Cone
 Sphere
